First chair of High Speed Railway Engineering for Atkins


tkins has appointed Professor Peter Woodward as its first ever chair of High Speed Rail Engineering for the UK. Currently Professor of Railway Geotechnical Engineering and head of the Institute for Infrastructure & Environment at Heriot-Watt University, Professor Woodward will work with Atkins’ team to overcome some of the challenges of high speed and move into the realm of ultra high speed rail. Douglas McCormick, managing director of Atkins’ Rail business said: ‘Peter is a recognised industry expert and his appointment further underlines Atkins’ commitment to both the rail industry and Heriot-Watt University The requirement for high speed rail is growing at a pace - with projects worldwide expected to be worth £100’s of billions in just the next 15 years. The combined efforts of Atkins and Professor Woodward offer a real opportunity to develop solutions in the UK that will overcome global challenges, to the benefit of UK Plc.’


Merseyrail appoints safety director D


avid Foster has joined as safety and assurance director and heads the Safety function. He will be responsible for directing and advising on all aspects of safety, including environmental and counter terrorist matters. Said Foster: 'I will focus on developing the recently reorganised safety team, reviewing the safety management systems and positioning the company as one of the highest performing players in the industry.'

David Johnson joins North Western route


N Mark Carne New chief executive for Network Rail announced M


ark Carne, formerly executive vice president for the Middle East and North Africa for Royal Dutch Shell, is to be Network Rail’s next chief executive.


Carne will join the organisation on 6th January 2014 before formally taking over as chief executive from David Higgins on 1st April 2014.


Chairman, Richard Parry Jones, said: ‘Through his work with Shell and BG Group in very testing and difficult environments, Mark Carne has shown that he has the necessary skill and global experience to develop further what Network Rail has already achieved in meeting challenges under the leadership of David Higgins. We thank David for all he has done for the company.’ Mark Carne said: ‘The success of Network Rail is vital for Britain’s economy and this is an exciting time for the whole rail industry. I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead Network Rail and look forward to working with the team to drive performance to new heights.’

as suicide prevention manager for the London North Western Route. Johnson, on secondment from Virgin Trains, will work with both the Samaritans and British Transport Police, as well as passenger and freight operators to help prevent such incidents.
