Business profile

The company’s pre-fabricated manhole

and catchpit products are manufactured offsite, taking into account water flow rates and ground conditions for each length of track. Working this way ensures that these PADS-approved solutions are only brought to site when the project calls for them to be quickly installed and connected to trackside drainage systems.

Cable protection As the UK’s largest supplier, Polypipe’s vast range of robust, proven cable protection solutions already safeguard thousands of miles of cables at stations and trackside across the UK. As well as keeping out water, which could damage expensive cabling and equipment, cable protection products from Polypipe also help to prevent metal theft – saving rail operators money while improving passenger safety. Boasting twin wall, single wall and coil products within its range to suit a variety of access and ground conditions, these products offer a flexible and practical solution in a variety of railway applications.

Bespoke, pre-fabricated multi- connection UTX chambers allow numerous Ridgiduct pipes to be laid in various configurations around the railway track. All of Polypipe’s cable protection

ranges are certified to British and European standards and are colour coded according to National Joint Utilities Group guidelines.

Station systems Polypipe also has extensive experience helping consultants plan effective drainage and water management strategies in a number of station refurbishment projects. Station complexes face heightened

problems from surface water due to the need for large areas of impermeable paved surfacing. Areas such as concourses, car parks and platforms can all contribute to rainwater run-off, which can quickly overwhelm drainage systems and lead to flooding. To combat this, the environment agency has developed planning guidelines for controlling and managing water at source through the use of sustainable urban drainage systems. Polypipe works closely with contractors, architects and engineers to provide a water management solution appropriate to each station’s requirements in line with these guidelines. Polypipe systems span the process of

‘roof to river’ water management, using a wide range of innovative, proven products for attenuation, drainage, soakaway and rainwater harvesting. With all the benefits of robust plastic

construction and offering flexibility of design through bespoke fabrication, they can dramatically speed up installation

times and keep passenger inconvenience to a minimum.

The range of Polypipe stations drainage and water management products includes:

Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe Ridgistorm-XL is used for large volume drainage and in the construction of attenuation tanks to store water and delay its release into sewers after heavy rainfall – greatly reducing the risk of flooding around key areas in and around the station. Available in diameters between 750mm

and 2100mm, with ring stiffness classes from SN2 to SN8 available and approved by WRc, Ridgistorm-XL can be engineered exactly to the right profile strength for each project to ensure an effective and adaptable solution that is appropriately engineered.

Polystorm geocellular solutions Lightweight and easy to handle, Polystorm cells can be combined to create a strong, load bearing geocellular tank to accept large volumes of water channelled from platforms, car parks and surface drains. They can also be wrapped in an impermeable membrane for attenuation applications, or in a permeable membrane for soakaway to surrounding sub soil. There are several options available

within the Polystorm Geocellular range, ensuring that the right cell can be specified regardless of burial depth or

load bearing calculation. The range now includes the new Polystorm Access and Inspect solutions, which can be designed into Polystorm systems to allow visual inspection for maintenance work. For projects where a shallow application is needed, Polypipe’s Permavoid geocellular system provides a comprehensive water management and treatment solution.

Rainstream RXL rainwater harvesting Rainstream RXL is a rainwater harvesting and re-use system, used for the storage and re-use of surface water run-off from car parks, concourses and platforms and contributing to sustainability targets for consumption and emissions. It can significantly reduce station water consumption, particularly in water- intensive areas such as toilets, urinals and rolling stock washdown. The Rainstream RXL tank is a bespoke,

fully engineered product based on the same proven technology as the Ridgistorm- XL large diameter pipe. The result is a tank of exceptional stiffness and integrity that can be installed without the need for a concrete surround and without any mains water ‘ballast’ to weigh it down during installation. Polypipe also provides a wide range of products suitable for other types of drainage and water management applications.
