and a good gastro choice. Armathwaite Hall in the Lake District appeared to tick all the boxes. Located just over an hour’s drive from our home, Armathwaite Hall is the perfect place for a retreat break. With a grand entrance and a winding drive you’re mentally transported to country estate living. Overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake (which strictly speaking is the only lake in the National Park), the Hall stands in 400 acres of beautiful countryside, boasting woodlands and a deer park. Walking and exploring is a must. Armathwaite is privately owned by the Graves family and, although a country estate, lends itself to a cosy family atmosphere, with roaring fires echoing a bygone era. Armathwaite Halls boasts traditional

decor in all the right places, complemented by contemporary comforts and state of the art facilities. We are shown to one of the spa suites - a recent addition to Armathwaite - and we weren’t disappointed with a huge bathroom wall concealed TV, bath, separate shower and of course the fluffy robes for lounging. Te main suite featured a king- size bed, TV, tea and coffee making facilities and a private decking area. Although not overlooking the lake it was the perfect setting for a glass of rosé on a sunny afternoon. After unpacking my partner and I had a light lunch in the Courtyard brassiere. Although the venue offers a selection of healthy options, we could not help but indulge with our choice of hickory rack of ribs and homemade coleslaw. With so much on offer at Armathwaite Hall you’re never short of things to do. We spent the rest of our afternoon in the spa overlooking
ollowing a long week in the office we sought a quick break away to recharge our batteries. We wanted somewhere not too far away, with beautiful scenery
the lake and the gardens. Te facility boasts an outdoor infinity Jacuzzi, indoor pool, gym and a vast menu of spa treatments to choose from. As the sun set we sipped out aperitifs
overlooking the majestic lake before joining our fellow guests for dinner in the Lake View Restaurant. Master chef Kevin Dowling’s menu did not disappoint and we were treated to some of his specialities. I opted for chicken liver parfait with grape and apple chutney and toasted sour bread. My partner enjoyed pan seared mullet on piperode with basil dressing. For mains the seared fillet of sea bass risotto and lobster with a brandy and lobster bisque provided a beautiful mix of tastes. My partner chose crispy belly pork, black pudding scallops with apple puree and apple foam. Selecting a dessert was a little tricky as we were spoilt for choice. So we took advantage of both a sweet dish apple crumble with custard and cinnamon ice cream, followed by a selection of English cheese, biscuits and fruits, and coffee served in the lounge. It was the perfect way to round off our day. For the more energetic guests there are so many outdoor activities to enjoy. Te Lake District Wildlife Park is located on the estate and offers visitors a chance to meet over 100 species of animals. Tere’s also an abundance of walks, gardens, and stunning vistas to enjoy.
