It is loosely based on his own experiences in the pre-World War II Hawaiian Division’s 27th Infantry and the unit in which he served. T ornhill says: “It holds no punches and is a truthful book and surprisingly ahead of its time. Unfortunately some things haven’t changed in the world and people are still at war. I couldn’t believe when I was reading it that it was written so long ago as it feels very up to date in its language.” In addition to an award-winning novel, the

story was also adapted into an eight-time Academy Award-winning fi lm by director Fred Zinnemann and producer Buddy Adler. T e 1953 fi lm adaptation, which starred Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift and Deborah Kerr as Karen, will no doubt draw some daunting comparisons then. Not that the cast are feeling the pressure though. T ornhill says: “I can’t be Deborah Kerr - that will never happen. But I can be Karen Holmes.

“And Karen is a fantastic acting role. It’s been interesting trying to get into her head and feel the emotions that she must have gone through during the tragedy that occurred in her life. She is a very strong woman - something you don’t often get to play in musical theatre.”

“I can’t be Deborah Kerr. But I can be Karen Holmes.”

Joining T ornhill on stage will be Darius Campbell as Warden, Siubhan Harrison as Lorene, Robert Lonsdale as Prewitt and Ryan Sampson as Maggio. T e cast also includes Keisha Amponsa Banson, Marc Antolin, Julie Armstrong, John Brannoch, Brian Doherty, Jessica Ellen, Stephen Webb, Laura Tyrer,

Matthew Wesley, Lucinda Shaw, David Stoller and Waren Sollars. T e musical, which features an original score and songs including Fight the Fight and Another Language, will also unite the writing talents of Tim Rice, co-lyricist Stuart Brayson and Bill Oakes, who wrote the show’s book. In addition to being Rice’s fi rst new stage musical in over a decade, From Here to Eternity marks Brayson’s West End debut as a composer.
