some 200 odd steep winding steps as we did to our cost one evening. Breakfast provided yet another excuse to

with the surroundings, as if you were holed up in a luxurious cavern. Troughout the island and particularly in neighbouring Oia, the traditional nature of the architecture is maintained. Te picture postcard white and blue domed buildings are prevalent, creating a never ending photo opportunity. Oia, at the northern tip of the island, is

Santorini’s most handsome town and offered an array of first rate restaurants. Visitors flock here to secure a prime view of the sunset, which ensures a healthy turnover for local businesses during the summer months. The more adventurous may also investigate the fish restaurants down by the harbour, if they are willing to negotiate

savour the glorious view of the Caldera, including the looming Skaros Rock dead ahead. At first glance the breakfast menu appeared to offer only modest options. Little did I realise that the entire menu would be served up to us, making for a decadent feast. Later, it was time to escape the midday sun and enjoy our respective spa treatments. Given the obvious space limitations of building upon a high, steep slope, it is perhaps unsurprising that the hotel spa consisted of just a small single room, adjoining the fitness suite. But the lack of grandeur was more than compensated by the skilled service. Our masseur kindly accommodated my wife, who is six months pregnant, with a specially tailored massage and Mediterranean facial treatment. I had never felt as relaxed as when I enjoyed my aloe deep hydration massage, which lasted a whole joyous hour. With the soothing music and expert touch, the perfect ambience is created away from the sun’s glare and you are left feeling completely at ease with the world. Just spending time on this delightful island, under four hours from home, is enough to reinvigorate body and mind. Ever mesmerised by the island vista, we could think of nothing better than lounging by the infinity pool and marvelling at the royal blue sky, which was never to be interrupted by cloud.

Enjoy welcome fruits and a bottle of local wine on arrival
