Travel
and meadows, into the ultimate wilderness - where a cosy lodge awaits your arrival. Daily helicopter flights take you to one of a number of local mountain peaks, often still laden with untouched snow, for an energizing hike. Quite exceptional – but remember to bring your adventurer’s spirit. If this all sounds a little more challenging than you were planning, how about a spot of rock climbing, horse riding or fishing? Is this still too much? Ten how about taking a guided motorcoach tour, a leisure boat ride across Lake Louise, a picnic at Waterfowl Park or enjoying a wonderful two day scenic rail journey, leaving from Banff and traversing the heart of the Rockies? Separated from Banff National Park by the majestic Columbia Icefield, which by the way should also be part of any visit, is magnificent Jasper National Park. Sitting high in the Rocky Mountains, it is simply stunning throughout the year. Te landscape may change from wildflower filled springs and lush green summers to crisp white winters but no seasonal changes can diminish the natural beauty it beholds. Te rugged landscape offers perfect slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding and challenging terrain for cross-country lovers. Marmot Basin offers the highest base elevation of all Canadian ski areas, and boasts 1,675 acres, 86 runs and 3,000 vertical feet of varied terrain, ideal for skiers of all abilities. Canada’s oldest form of winter transportation, dog-sledding provides the ultimate Canadian adventure. Friendly Huskies take you deep into
the Canadian Rockies, a land where snow- covered timbers, frozen waterfalls and endless panoramic views surround you.
An Urban Legend Let’s not forget about Alberta’s fabulous and varied cities. Calgary and Edmonton are the biggest, each offering a unique and varied take on urban life. Calgary, home to the 1988 Winter Olympics, provides a vision of Canada old and new, from line-dancing in historic dance halls to eclectic shopping and multi-national dining. Te annual Calgary Stampede held in July, is the largest outdoor rodeo in the world, and offers ten days of entertainment from chuck-wagon racing to bull riding. Alberta’s capital; Edmonton, has a fabulous year-round schedule of entertainment, including festivals, rodeos and rock concerts. Unlike many cities, Edmonton is all about the outdoors. Te North Saskatchewan River flows right through it, and crossing one of the many bridges from the central hub brings you to dozens of parks and woodland trails, which are ideal for hiking, jogging and cycling. Are you ready for some retail therapy? Te West Edmonton Mall is a shopper’s haven. One of the biggest malls in the world it boasts over 800 stores and even has its very own indoor waterpark, thrilling rollercoaster ride and bustling nightlife scene.
It’s no surprise that more and more of us are looking for a holiday ‘experience’ which either
aligns with our interests at home or takes us entirely out of our comfort zone. Does that mean that an Alberta holiday isn’t relaxing? Perhaps. But in my experience there is nothing more energising than invigorating days interwoven with their leisurely opposite. To be frank, you will return refreshed and inspired and have some fabulous stories to share of your holiday experiences.
