1. SuperFast Thermapen Digital Thermometer £28.80 We’ve all heard (and, if you’re unlucky, been the subject of) horror stories when it comes to undercooked sausages. A pro will tell you avoiding such mishaps is all about mastering the grill, moving coals around to produce high heat in one corner and slow, low burn areas in the other. But to avoid any disasters, this superfast (we’re talking three seconds), accurate and compact probe thermometer is essential. The professionals love it – and that says it all. Available online via Dursley-based Factory First. ✱

2. Faringdon Collection Barbecue Grill £5.95 There’s perhaps nothing more
delicious than a whole fish cooked over hot coals – but cook them too well and the flesh can easily flake apart straight onto the grill. (And no-one wants that.) That’s where nifty little clamps like this come into play. Sandwich whole mackerel, butterflied sardines or fillets of megrim between the bars and flip without fear! It’s also great for sliced veg and halloumi. Delicious. Available in store at Cookability in Wotton- under-Edge and online. ✱

3. Weber Chimney Starter £19.99 If we’ve learnt anything from our day with Henry Herbert and the Weber team at Hobbs House (page 36) it’s that a chimney starter will transform the way you barbecue. It measures the

exact amount of coals you need (so no waste, which we like) and it gets the coals to just the right temperature in only 20 minutes. Available in store at Lechlade Garden Centre. ✱

4. Recycled Kadai and Stand £250 Inspired by the fire pit from our Supper Club on page 41? You’ll love this multi-tasking barbecue. The kadai originated in India and was first used for cooking at festivals. Nowadays, though, they can be used for cooking a fry up in the summer, as a fire bowl in the winter – or even as a planter if you really can’t master cooking over coals! Each kadai is made from recycled iron and comes with tongs, steel grills and a wire
brush for cleaning. That’ll make the hefty £250 cost a little bit more palatable then… Available in store and online at Burford Garden Centre. ✱

5. Colourworks Silicone Headed Tongs £7.99 A good pair of tongs is crucial to a successful barbecue: no one wants a slippery sausage going amiss, after all. Turn your minute steaks with style, poke your corn on the cob with confidence and flick your fillets over with vigour. These tongs are flexible, hygienic, stain resistant and can takes heat up to 260C. Oh, and you can pop them in the dishwasher too. Available in a range of colours in store and online from The Crock in Stow-on-the-Wold. ✱
