Who knows the menu best? Who makes the greatest impact on your experience? Front-of-house is your friend!
Ask your Waitress
What’s the best thing about working at the Inn? I think it’s the camaraderie of the staff, and how our focus is always on the guest. Everyone who works here is relaxed but professional and, as a consequence, the guests seem happy.
What skills have you learnt since being here? How to spot when the boss, Helen, is grumpy – and then to make her a nice cup of tea!
What sort of customers do you get? We have a large mix of guests here, both old and young and lots of regulars, whether drinking or eating. It makes for a very pleasant environment to work in.
What are the best-selling dishes at the moment? We have a dish called lobsterlicious during the summer – you choose a whole or half lobster and then decide whether you’d like it served cold with mayonnaise or hot with a Thermidor or Welsh rarebit topping. The fresh Cornish crab with hot new potatoes and salad is another favourite, and Eton mess and summer pudding are definitely our top-selling puddings.
What are the best-selling drinks? We have an amazing wine list with lots of lovely Clarets and unusual boutique wines. Our beers on the four- hand pulls are always popular too. We change them regularly and try to use the best from local breweries, such as Abingdon Bridge by Loose Cannon or Wayland Smithy by White Horse.
What makes the restaurant a special place to visit? Me! Only joking, but I do think the warm and friendly atmosphere from the staff means everyone feels very welcome.
If you were a customer today, what would you order? I think gazpacho for starters, followed by the confit rabbit Wellington with chargrilled Mediterranean vegetables and wild mushroom sauce and then, of course, summer pudding.
FISHY BUSINESS
JANET BOWLES, senior waitress at The Trout Inn at Tadpole Bridge, near Faringdon
How long have you worked at The Trout Inn? Over five years now!
And where were you before that? The Plough at Clanfield and Millets Farm, to name just a couple.
Are Trout Inn customers good tippers? We don’t expect it, but it is always appreciated.
Where do you like to eat on your days off? I think The Swan at Swinbrook is very good, or I enjoy visiting Hackett’s in Witney for a light bite.
What do you cook at home? I like to think a little bit of everything. It helps that my husband is a butcher!
