Rift user numbers leap up following free-to-play switch

Business model ‘removed the barriers’ for Trion Worlds MMO ‘Constant’ updates planned by James Batchelor

TRION says switching to free-to-play has done wonders for MMO Rift. The game dropped its subscription model in June, and the publisher says it has attracted more players and bolstered the game’s long- term prospects. “Our vision for Rift is the same: to provide frequent and constant updates and

add to the world of Telara,” senior design director Simon Ffinch told MCV. “Free-to-play has removed the barriers so there are more people enjoying it.” Ffinch also disputed the stigma that MMO publishers turning to free-to-play is a sign of failure.

“That is less true than it used to be,” he said. “Free- to-play is becoming a far more accepted model.

“And Riftalready had a very robust player count so it certainly didn’t ‘fail’.” Trion: 01483 549555
