RETAIL CHART ANALYSIS: JULY

Nintendo dominates awful July 1.1m

There was only really one winner in what was the weakest month for UK games retail ever – Nintendo’s 3DS. Christopher Dring takes a look at the data to analyse a very slow month for boxed games

IT WAS long predicted that the summer was going to be a very poor time for games retail. And it is proving to be, with July the worst month on record for UK boxed games retail. A lack of new games, coupled with the hot weather, has kept gamers out of shops. And so The Last of Us remains No.1 for a second month. The game totalled six weeks at the top of the charts, a feat also achieved by Call of Duty: Black Ops IIand FIFA 12. The Last of Ushas been a big success for SONY. It is now the second biggest selling game of the year behind Tomb Raiderand disproves the old adage that new IP doesn’t work at the end of a console cycle. For all the poor market statistics, not everyone came out of July feeling blue. NINTENDO in particular was resilient, and 3DS emerged from the month as the No.1 selling console. It saw an increase in software sales, too. Almost 130,000 3DS titles were sold in July, with seven 3DS titles in the Top 50. All seven were published by Nintendo.

Over in camp Xbox, and MICROSOFT’s console reclaimed its market top spot from Sony (at least in terms of units). The firm also rose up the publisher rankings due to the boxed release of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition.

The Last of Us is the second best seller of the year, disproving the adage that new IP doesn’t work at the end of a console cycle.

July’s No.2 retail game may have sold millions via Xbox Live Arcade, but there was still a sizeable audience that preferred to buy the boxed version. But small successes aside, it was a depressed month overall, with just 1.1m games sold. Don’t expect sales to recover until the end of August.
