THE Philippines has a population of over 97m and that number is growing rapidly. It’s also part of the Asia-Pacific region that remains the largest gaming market in the world. By 2015 there are expected to be over 100 million gamers throughout the region’s emerging markets, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. This population and strong gamer base makes the country’s games market an ideal one for firms to enter. And despite being smaller in size, the market has kept up with the region’s neighbouring nations thanks to the availability of consoles at the nation’s leading retailers. But an issue that continues to plague the nation is the cost of these devices and the games available on them.

The average monthly salary stands at £128. That puts the PS3 and Xbox 360 out of reach of most consumers.

This has led many consumers to shy away from the country’s retailers to obtain their games from street vendors, where pirated games are available for just 70 pesos. Even the country’s biggest shopping malls are home to piracy,
such as the PS3 and Xbox 360 out of reach of most consumers. Even those able to purchase the consoles still struggle to afford the platform’s new releases, with titles on Xbox 360 costing upwards of 2,300 pesos.
as they house stalls openly selling these pirated titles, along with offering the console modification services needed to play them. Government officials within the country are keen to counter games piracy by removing illegal games from the nation’s streets. But these attempts have had little effect and the issue still remains.
Outside of piracy, the high cost of console gaming has arguably fuelled the popularity of PC gaming within the Philippines. The platform is the most widely owned amongst the country’s consumers and online focused titles such as DotA 2, Ragnarok Onlineand Counter Strike are the most played by Filipino gamers.
The large number of computer stores across the country have allowed gamers to hire PCs to play these multiplayer titles for a relatively small cost.
