Malaysia Find venues both modern and mystical
Modern Malaysia The Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, which opened in June 2009 as Borneo’s first purpose-built convention center, offers a 30,000-square-foot Great Hall and 14 meeting rooms.
City center Beyond its 3,000-seat plenary hall, 104,000-square-foot exhibition hall, and ballroom accommodating up to 2,000 guests in the heart of Malaysia’s capital, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is Asia’s first venue to receive the EarthCheck Certification.
Often referred to as a microcosm of Asia, Malaysia’s diverse mix of cultures, cuisines, and landscapes blend to create an impactful and inspiring setting for meetings. Venues are an important part of that mix, and from modern hotels to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Malaysia’s myriad options build off the country’s centuries of heritage and tradi- tions. All of this set against idyllic backdrops of lush rainforests, rugged mountains, and tropical islands, combined with the warm hospitality of Malaysia’s native people — and meeting planners will find they have a modern-yet-mystical destination that incorporates the best of the country’s past and present. The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre
(KLCC) is modern-day Malaysia at its best. In the center of Kuala Lumpur, the facility is currently planning an expansion to meet the demands of a growing list of meetings and events. Under the Greater Kuala Lumpur
90 PCMA CONVENE JULY 2013
Development and Economic Transforma- tion Programme, a new 26-mile overhead pedestrian walkway will link major points of interest and hotels around Kuala Lum- pur. A portion linking the KLCC, Impiana KLCC Hotel, and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur — a 1.37-million-square-foot mall — has already been completed. In addition, the program includes plans to increase the KLCC’s con- vention and exhibition space by 135,000 square feet by 2017 to handle events in excess of 6,000 attendees. Beyond its modern convention facili-
ties, many of Malaysia’s historic landmarks accommodate groups. For example, both Penang’s Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, named one of the world’s top 10 greatest mansions and grand houses by Lonely Planet, and 200-year-old Suffolk House, a UNESCO heri- tage landmark, offer guided tours for groups. The award-winning Sarawak Cultural Village, 21 miles from Kuching, Sarawak, gives groups
of up to 2,000 a chance to experience Malay- sia’s heritage and ethnic diversity through cultural performances and an interactive museum. And just outside Kuala Lumpur, the Thean Hou Temple, one of the largest Chinese temples in Southeast Asia, is avail- able for large galas and banquets.
