INDEPENDENT STUDIO

CCP GAMES

The Icelandic studio behind Eve Online has been a pioneer in the MMO space. With Dust 514, it set itself the improbable task of merging its established space MMO with Sony’s online network. While not perfect, CCP deserves recognition for its effort, which is certainly the direction gaming is evolving.

CRYTEK

Crytek has been busy in the last 12 months. It opened satellite studios in Shanghai, Istanbul and Austin, launched brand-new IP Warface and sequel Crysis 3, it purchased the rights to the Homefront series, and has an original social hub for high quality games in development. It’s all hands on deck for this studio.

DLALA STUDIOS

Formed in June 2012 by Craig Thomas and Aj Grand-Scrutton, Dlala created its first game Janksy in just nine-and-a-half weeks with a team of graduates – which netted the duo a Develop cover in October 2012. The game has now reached over 25,000 downloads. And now, they’re helping fellow indies to grow too.

NINJA THEORY

Cambridge studio Ninja Theory has had to fight more than most to keep up with the best and brightest in the triple-A scene. Tasked with refreshing Capcom’s cult Devil May Cry franchise, the studio has shown itself to be adaptable and not to mention brave in the face of sceptical forum dwellers.

PLAYGROUND GAMES

Since its formation in 2010, Playground Games has been working tirelessly towards its goal to build the best racing studio in the world. Having recurited a full team to tackle triple-A console development, Playground launched its debut title Forza Horizon last year to critical and commercial success.

SUMO DIGITAL

Sumo’s success has been ten years in the making. In that period it has shipped in excess of 30 titles across all platforms with a range of publishers. In the last quarter of 2012 alone, it shipped three major titles: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, LittleBigPlanet 2: Cross-Control (DLC) and the Nike+ Kinect Training.

SUPERCELL

Flying the flag for the Nordic region is Supercell and its money-maker, Clash of Clans. This Finnish studio exemplifies how compelling game design, smart business management and a little luck can catapult an independent studio to dizzying heights.

YIPPEE ENTERTAINMENT

Yippee set up shop in February 2011 following the closure of a Manchester game studio. Its first original IP, Chimpact, was created with a suite of proprietary technologies over the course of 11 months. Chimpact has since been released on mobiles, tablets and PC, and has reached over 1.2 million users.
