EPIC GAMES
Epic was a deserved winner of last year’s Tools Provider award. Unreal Engine 3’s toolset has been frequently updated to ensure its users base has access to cutting- edge tools. It’s expanded the engine to new platforms, such as HTML5, and has continued to support educational initiatives.
FIRELIGHT TECHNOLOGIES
FMOD, the audio creation tools made by Firelight Technologies, have aided game developers and outsourcers in sound design and music creation for years. The tools have been integrated into Unity, Unreal Engine, CryEngine and more. Games it has been used in included Tomb Raider and World of Tanks.
GEOMERICS
Geomerics technology has been used in a host of triple-A games, such as Battlefield 3. Last year’s Technical Innovation winner has continued its work in 2012/13, making its lighting tool Enlighten available on a variety of middleware and platforms, including next-gen consoles, PC and mobile.
HAVOK
Havok tools have powered some of gaming most spectacular moments. With Physic 2013, it is gearing up for the next generation, and with its HTML5 engine for 3D mobile games Project Anarchy, it is making its suite of tools to more widely available for developers of all sizes.
MARMALADE
In the last 12 months, Marmalade has diversified the platforms it supports, which now includes desktops, iOS, Android, BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone. It has listened closely to the issues mobile developers face and released software to solve such things, namely Marmalade Juice and Marmalade Quick.
PERFORCE
Perforce has continued to serve the community with its pipeline systems, the tech that’s essential for organising the vast complexity of games projects. Its software version management is based on flexibility, scalability and shard solutions. It has been used by Supermassive Games, CCP Games and more.
UNITY TECHNOLOGIES
Unity’s rise has continued in the last 12 months with another year of growth. It now has 1.8m registered devs using the engine and tool set, and over 400,000 monthly users. New deals to bring its tools to Wii U, as well as all of SCE’s PlayStation platforms mean its remains ones of the most valuable avenues for development.
