USE OF NARRATIVE

CRYSIS 3 Crytek

Closing a trilogy is a tough cookie. You can’t please everyone, but building on the success of the previous two games, Crytek listened to fan feedback and added their wishes into its finale. Novelist Steven Hall returned to pen the storyline, and the narrative was intertwined with the gameplay to conclude the trilogy triumphantly.

DISHONORED Arkane Studios

Rebels fighting a corrupt government is nothing new. But Dishonored’s tale of lowly rebels struggling to save the remains of society against a host regime and a deadly plague enthralled critics and consumers alike. In Dunwall, Arkane has created a steampunk world which is fit to branch into more stories.

THE 39 STEPS The Story Mechanics

One of the greatest strengths of The 39 Steps is its depiction of narrative and the total story experience. Adapted from the existing licence, the studio has merged aspects of literature, film and gaming to create a flowing system, putting across a coherent narrative experience giving flexibility to the player.

THE ROOM Fireproof Games

Like everything else in this title, The Room treats its story with grace. It’s in no rush to stifle a player’s enjoyment of its puzzle gameplay, but its narrative about uncovering the hidden research of a departed friend gives agency to your actions, and serves to make the mystery that bit more involving.

THOMAS WAS ALONE Mike Bithell

Abstract in appearance, but bigger than the sum of its parts. The game’s eponymous hero is represented by nothing more than a simple rectangle, and with him as the protagonist players are led through a tale about the first self-aware artificial intelligence in a computer mainframe.

WONDERBOOK: BOOK OF SPELLS London Studio

Book of Spells puts the player’s story at the heart of the experience with a responsive, player-driven narrator engine and exclusive new writing from JK Rowling. It draws on over 60,000 words of dialogue with a complex system of generic and situation-specific strings to create a one-to-one experience.

XI: CONTINUUM nDreams

Xi: Continuum was the hotly anticipated sequel to Xi, which was the first ever console- based alternate reality game. Continuum had a rich, evolving storyline that was told inside the evolving PlayStation Home space and across a range of fully localised websites that updated over time and through videos revealed at certain points in the story.

ZOMBIU Ubisoft Montpellier

The sight of zombies forcing their way through the narrow corridors of the London Underground excited players keen to fight their way through London’s iconic transport system. This time, the zombie outbreak stems from a prophecy by John Dee, and players must explore the city in order to stop the outbreak.
