ABERTAY UNIVERSITY PROTOTYPE FUND


Abertay’s Prototype Fund has funded more than 60 new IPs and supports start-ups and small developers across the UK to create new games and interactive media prototypes. The fund supports new studios with grants up to £25,000, office space and more. Studios funded include Quartic Llama, Guerilla Tea, Wish Studios, Swallowtail Games and many more.


EUTECHNYX


Taking on the publishers at their own game, in 2010 Eutechnyx became the master video game rights holder for the world-famous motor sport brand, NASCAR. After console game launches in 2011 and 2012 partnering with Activision, Eutechnyx broadened its rights to include mobile, social and online.


KING


By this point, you can’t fail to have heard of Candy Crush Saga, the Facebook/mobile game that become a worldwide craze and has almost single-handedly boosted its creator, King, to colossal profit levels. At GDC, King revealed that it has 50 million daily players and 108 million monthly unique players.


MEDIATONIC


2012 has seen Mediatonic busier than ever. The firm, which tends to tackle free-to- play and mobile games, has had more projects than ever before, such as XBLA title Foul Play, and its scope has increased too as the industry continues to diversify. It moved into a huge new office in Soho, and opened another studio in Brighton, creating 50 new jobs.


MIND CANDY


Moshi Monsters has become a global phenomenon since launching in 2008. With over 75 million registered users worldwide in over 150 territories, the business is set to make £47.5 million in revenue in 2013. Merchandising has been it big move. Moshi Monsters has an array of physical products including best-selling toys, membership cards, books and more.

JAGEX


Cambridge-based developer Jagex continues to evolve and is using its online expertise in more than just the next iteration of its flagship MMO. Jagex secured the Transformers licence to make an MMO out of the popular franchise, and has has adopted HTML5 to take its existing franchises – such as RuneScape 3 – and new ones to mobile.


THE FOUNDRY


British animation and digital effects house The Foundry has stepped up its involvement in the games industry, aiding teams from LucasArts, Ubisoft and Sanzaru Games. In 2012, it merged with Luxology, boosting its development potential. For games, its offers compositing package NukeX, 3d texture painting tool Mari and 3D software Modo.


WARGAMING


In two years, the boys and girls from Belarus have rewritten what players expect from wartime action games. F2P MMO World of Tanks has millions of users, and has turned Wargaming into a worldwide entity. With its profits, the company has opened a string of new offices and even acquired US console developer Day 1.
