Energized by YouthPower Four local students represented OEC at

this year’s Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives’ (OAEC) YouthPower Energy Camp the last week of May. Tey were among 88 soon- to-be high school freshmen from across the state sponsored by their local rural electric cooperatives to attend the camp. Dominick Bruce of Choctaw, Joel Bullock of

Wanette, Garrett Fulks of Lexington and James Tompson of Oklahoma City enjoyed the four- day, action-packed camp, which is held annually at Canyon Camp near Hinton. Teir favorite activities included climbing the

electric pole and dancing the night away at the camp’s dance party on the final night. Tey also enjoyed taking a 60-foot-high bucket truck ride as well as playing games and riding go-carts at Celebration Station. However, the most memorable part of the trip for one camper involved the mock candy co-op formed every year. “In my opinion, the most exciting part of the trip

was the interview to be General Manager,” Bullock said. “I don’t believe I have ever been so nervous.” One of the main goals of the camp is to teach the

students about electric cooperatives. Tis is achieved when they are assigned with the task of forming their own “Coke & Candy Co-op.” Each student is a “member” of the co-op, and they elect a Board of Directors—OEC’s Dominick Bruce was a Director. Tat Board of Directors then interviews those interested in being the co-op’s General Manager.

by Brianna Wall In addition to gaining leadership and team-

building skills, each student also made a host of new friends for which they are thankful. “Tis was an experience I will never forget,”

said Tompson. “I now know many new people and made new friends because of this experience.” OEC awards trips to camp to eighth grade

students through an essay contest conducted every spring. For more information on next year’s camp, contact Brianna Wall at 217-6708 or visit the Youth Involvement page on www.okcoop.org.
