■ currents ask your co-op

Q. A.

My bill fluctuates a lot during the year, which makes it hard for me to plan my household budget. What can I do?

Electric bills in Oklahoma do fluctuate a lot, and that’s due to our extremely hot summers

and chilly winters. For co-op members these extremes can make it difficult to know how to plan for household energy expenses.

To help residential members avoid seasonal surprises, Choctaw Electric offers an average monthly payment plan (AMP). When you enroll in AMP, your energy usage is averaged over the past 12 months. The process helps level out those seasonal dips and spikes, so your electric bill is more consistent from month to month.

AMP is an excellent plan for members on a limited income or any member who prefers a more predictable electric bill.

To enroll in AMP, you must have at least a 12 month billing history at your current location. Your account must be in good standing and you should have a satisfactory payment history with the co-op.

Enrollment forms for AMP are found online at www.choctawelectric.coop. Click on “Resources,” and then “Forms.” To visit with a representative about AMP, call 800-780-6486, ext 243 or 204.

Email: jboling@choctawelectric.coop. Candidates for CEC board

must file by July 30 deadline Choctaw Electric Cooperative (CEC) members who plan to run for a seat on the CEC board of trustees must submit their intention to run by July 30, 2013.

According to cooperative bylaws, any challenger for nominations to the office of the trustee must submit a petition signed by 25 members within their CEC voting district to be eligible for the election. The petitions must be submitted to CEC’s Hugo office by the close of business on Tuesday, July 30th.

The CEC bylaws define the specific qualifications for board members in Section 4.02. These guidelines require board members to live in the district they represent. They must also be willing to attend training to become certified as qualified rural electric cooperative board members. Certain restrictions ensure the CEC board remains fair and unbiased as they make decisions pertaining to electric service in southeast Oklahoma.

This year cooperative members will elect representatives for Districts A, H, and I. The election will take place during the CEC Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 28, 2013, in Hugo.

CEC board qualifications and proper nomination procedures are available at the CEC office in Hugo.
