Ambush Leather Continued from Page 23

Four and a half months of research and development followed as the partners examined gloves already on the market to see what worked and what didn’t. “It all came down to durability and fi t. And that’s what we’re about—quality and custom fi t,” Douglas says.

The Durant storeowner began making contacts with bull riders he knew and, according to Roades, “The next thing we knew, we’re being seen on TV and even at the bull riding fi nals in Vegas.”

“We have top professional bull riders riding in our gloves and saying ‘This is the only glove I’ll wear because it feels so good and it holds up so well.’” Douglas adds. “We have guys that have ridden 45 to 70 outs. The industry standard is 25 to 30.”

Get Your Goat

While many of the Ambush garments are made of African goat—one of the toughest skins available—the bull riding gloves also feature deer palms because of the softness and suppleness of deerskin and its ability to absorb the resin the riders use.

As the gloves took off, other accessories followed. They added riding vests and custom- order chaps. Traditional camoufl age patterns morphed into bright colors. “Today’s bull riders want to be different and they want to be noticed. The industry as a whole was not catering to that,” Douglas explains. “We came in and said, ‘This is unique; it’s different; it’s better; it lasts longer.’ These guys started embracing the look because it’s fl ashy but once they started wearing the product, they were sold on the quality.” The company carries a number of other items—from purses and carry pouches to decorator pillows. They use different leathers, different weights and different processes depending on the end product. The common denominator is quality and fi t.

Business in the 21st Century Douglas and Roades are the epitome of entrepreneurship.

“I can’t even sew a button on my shirt,” Douglas says. “But I can supervise someone sewing a button.” In that spirit, they created a concept and went looking for people who could make it reality. Networking is a critical part of the process and they take full advantage of social media and technology. Douglas held up his cell phone revealing about twenty apps. With these tools in the palm of his hand, he can manage all his enterprises whether from his offi ce or his truck.

As modern as their technology is, their business plan is simple and solid. They determined

that they would grow their company at a rate they could accommodate and never jeopardize their families. They are passionate about entrepreneurship, understand the process and want to help other people achieve success. And they decided if an enterprise wasn’t fun, they weren’t going to do it.

“We’re outdoors people and our families are,” Roades says. “If we could fi gure out a way to make money camping and hunting, we’d do that. But this was an opportunity for us to bring a quality product that wasn’t out there to the marketplace.”
