FOUND SOUNDS, PO Box 20437, London, SW16 2YJ Gold Panda

Trust Ghostly International 8.0

Seems like a while since we heard from Gold Panda (his micro epic ‘You’ from the ‘Lucky Shiner’ LP still stands its ground), however now his sound has progressed into somewhat richer, more fuller climes. Evoking flashbacks to the melancholic electronica of BOC and Expanding Records releases, it’s as evocative as earlier output, yet with a much deeper and warmer understanding. Beautiful.

Lily And Madeleine

Weight of the Globe Asthmatic Kitty 7.5

Anika

Anika EP Stones Throw/Leaving Records

8.0

Co-produced by the ever- brilliant Geoff Barrow (whose list of enviable credits includes Quakers, Beak, Drokk, Portishead etc), this latest EP from impassive Bristol/Berlin vocalist Anika features a host of sluggish, unapologetic reworks, including idiosyncratic covers of The Kinks’ ‘I Go To Sleep’, The Crystals’ ‘He Hit Me’ and Shocking Blue’s psych gem ‘Love Buzz’. The fact that they were all apparently recorded in 12 days, live, with no overdubs, just adds to the magic.

Ana Helder

Beating PC Comeme 8.0

The Comeme camp has been coming good recently with a crop of releases that firmly stand on the left side of the dancefloor. This EP from Argentinean Helder is no exception. Analogue synths pay homage to Studio 54 as much as Detroit and Chicago, yet are all warped with a Euro sensibility. Top with percussion, live basslines and an ear for a most musical arrangement and you have the ‘Beating PC’ EP. Go girl!

Chicken Lips

All That You Do Southern Fried 7.5

In the words of the great Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy, “The boys are back in town!” Meecham and Meredith defy current trends and all Johnny-come-latelys with this sparse acid-inflected slice of electro soul. Like a velvet glove cast in iron, it soothes

and punishes all in one hit. For maximum effect though, try the booty bounce and tripped-out sonics of The Rhythm Odyssey version, that builds in the key of jack. Superb.

Fink

Warm Shadow Ninja Tune 8.5

The JJ Cale of the modern beats-driven era lands another fine salvo on our doorsteps with this smoke-filled lament. A little crunchier in the guitar department this time, and with a definite similarity to the kind of emotion that emits from Maverick Sabre, it’s another slice of excellent neo blue-eyed soul. Marcus Worgull adds a respectful version that just fleshes the original out somewhat.

Fryers

On Your Own 679 Recordings 8.0

Being hailed as an heir apparent to classic singer/songwriters like Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson by well-meaning but ultimately over-eager critics would usually be enough to send a burgeoning career into inevitable freefall — a journalistic death knell, if you like. But somehow you get the sense that Benjamin Garret — aka the 22-year-old talent behind this superbly crafted, heart-felt, torch song — will just take it in his stride. Pop in its purest, most beautiful form.

Belying an erstwhile maturity well beyond their tender years, these two young sisters from Indianapolis (16 and 18 respectively) certainly know how to pen a harmony or two. Immediate comparisons may well be drawn with fellow folky siblings The Staves (no bad thing maybe), but there is a definite sense of Americana that comes with their music, and it’s in the pure simplicity of ‘Back to the River’ that these two really come into their own.

Romare

Love Songs: Part One Black Acre 7.5

It’s been about a year or so since his last outing for Black Acre, but given the way in which this meticulous musical magpie creates his detailed musical tapestries, it’s probably no surprise. Drawing on samples, speeches, field recordings, films, television and whatever else he can lay his hands on, his labour-intensive productions are as detailed as they are delightful. A particular favourite here is the vintage, down-home blues of ‘Hey Now’. Check it out!

The Orb feat Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry

Ball of Fire Cooking Vinyl 8.5

With remixes from fellow low-end theorists Dabrye, Deadbeat and Mad Professor on offer, you just know this latest EP from The Orb warrants further investigation. And whilst their contributions are certainly decent, it’s the original that sits atop this release both literally and metaphorically. Bearing all the hallmarks of Thomas Fehlmann’s instantly recognizable production style, this is the sound of Brixton and Berlin working in happy unison.

Fraction feat Cubenx

Atoms of C Infine Records 7.0 Another mood-filled moment from the Infine camp. Driven tech beats and introspective soundscapes collide on this deep EP. Nice.

J’s Bee

Isotope Far Out Recordings 7.0 A two-track LP teaser from Japanese jazzers J’s Bee. A sweet fusion of minimal electronics and live instrumentation. Early Tortoise meets ECM.

Lea Lea

Black Or White Wah Wah 7.0

It’s the stripped-back, bass-led drama of the iZem remix that catches the attention here.

Full of atmospheric subtleties, garnished with the vocal velveteen of Lea Lea.

Rhye

Open Innovative Leisure 8.0

From the opening flourishes of strings, horns and harmonies, you just know this poignant and beautiful single is cut from a quality musical cloth. Looking forward to the album.

Tall Ships

Phosphorescence Big Scary Monsters/Blood & Biscuits 7.0

Cross-references include Battles and Minus the Bear. And you can see why! More rabble- rousing stuff taken from the Brighton-based trio’s album, ‘Everything Touching’.
