SPACE: PARKING’S FINAL FRONTIER

Things get personal as editor Sarah Juggins discusses parking provision with colleagues

astonished by the vehement response from my colleagues when it came to the size of parking spaces. ‘You should try getting out of a car in the hospital car park with a baby seat,’ said one woman – the mother of two young children. ‘There needs to be a lot more parent and child parking spaces available at supermarkets and shopping centres,’ said another, adding that she would happily walk further, if she could just have more space.

asting around the office for a general consensus on parking provision in the UK, I was

Their point was largely driven by concerns over safety. ‘I have to think very carefully about the order I get them out of the car. Cars come past so closely that I have to make my toddler always stay in contact with the car while I get the baby out.’ Another colleague said he had no trouble parking his standard-sized car, but he had seen the problems people with four-wheel drive vehicles had when it came to parking. ‘The fact is that there are more large cars, so

the parking provision should reflect that.’ I thought back to my own recent experiences and I was in total agreement. I admit it, I drive a ‘Chelsea tractor’, and I sometimes struggle to park. Just a few days ago, I endured the pitying look of a group of shoppers as I had tried to manoeuvre the beast into a tiny space between two estate cars. I eventually managed to get into the space, but emerged with dirt all down my jacket as I squeezed between my mud-splattered vehicle and the equally countrified Volvo parked next to me.

And the number of times I have cursed other drivers

who have left their cars parked at an angle, with their rear ends overlapping across the only spare space in the car park. As the comments, debates and eventual arguments flew around our cohort, the point that became increasingly obvious is that car park design is an area that is fraught with difficulties, and best practice is something that – once discovered – should be cherished and distributed to all car park designers.
