NEWS ‘L’ OF A PARTNERSHIP

Newly-qualified drivers will get free parking, worth up to £100, thanks to a partnership between car park operator Q-Park and the Driving Instructors Association (DIA). The joint initiative will give a number of benefits to both instructors and new drivers. The DIA was founded in 1978 to represent professional driving instructors and today the organisation has 12,000 driving school members. It offers members development courses, training days and networking opportunities to ensure instructors are always informed of the latest industry news and updates. Within the new partnership, Q-Park will offer all DIA members the chance to reward their pupils for passing their driving tests by giving them free parking vouchers up to the value of £100. Once they have passed, details about how to obtain the vouchers will be handed out to pupils by their driving instructor, along with a leaflet containing safety tips about parking. CAR PARKS PROVIDE INTERIM OPTION

Gallan Parking has taken on the operation of two new car parks providing 70 spaces in Worcester city centre.

The Birmingham-based company has taken a lease on a 29-space facility at Charles Street with Telereal Trillium. It has also begun managing a 44-space

part-surface and part-covered car park at St Martin’s Gate for Malvern developer and property owner Jeremy Knight-Adams. Both car parks make use of vacant land awaiting development.

Knight-Adams is proposing to replace the

part-surface element of St Martin’s Gate car park with a four-storey, 150-bed quality hotel with four ground-floor restaurant units. A former granary at the rear will provide additional parking until approval is given for the conversion of the building to shop units and nine self-contained flats. Gallan Parking car parking supervisor Ross Mutch said: ‘We are delighted to have

won these two new sites and to continue a healthy working partnership with such valued clients.’ He added: ‘These new car parks will provide a welcome boost to businesses and shoppers and a more pleasing environment as developers realise the additional revenue potential in turning land awaiting development into car parks.’

this will boost the confidence of the first-time driver while rewarding them for their achievement.

Students will also benefit from new training opportunities available as Q-Park will be opening its doors to members of the DIA, allowing them free access to practise parking in bays at a number of selected parking facilities. Initially the car parks available will be Brindleyplace, Birmingham, Talbot Street, Nottingham and Chatham Place, Reading, with more locations rolling out throughout 2013. Q-Park hopes that by providing this service, it will allow pupils to learn the basic skills of bay parking without the distraction of other vehicles.

In addition to these benefits, the new

partnership will allow DIA members to receive a special discount from the Q-Park online pre-booking service when they enter a unique promotional code. This offer will be available to all DIA members.

SUNNY TIMES IN GRAVESEND

Gravesham Borough Council (GBC) is installing 42 solar-powered Parkeon Strada Transfer parking terminals to replace the old, off-street machines in Gravesend. The new terminals are equipped with an electronic, alpha-numeric keyboard to facilitate a forced rotation scheme. ‘This is designed to prevent drivers from returning to a car park within a predetermined period. By ensuring regular vehicle rotation, spaces will be more fairly available,’ explained Paul Gibbons, GBC’s service manager (Parking and Amenities).

Drivers are required to enter their full registration plate data when they pay to park. ‘The information is printed on the parking receipt to discourage users from passing-on unexpired tickets to other drivers, which would otherwise reduce our revenues,’ added Gibbons. GBC purchased its Parkeon solution through the Eastern Shires Purchasing Organisation (ESPO), a service available to all local authorities throughout the UK.
