ew laws to tackle bad practice among a minority of bailiffs have been announced by the government and, on the whole, the bailiff community has welcomed the move. Under the new laws, bailiffs will be banned from entering homes at night, or properties where only children are present, and no physical contact will be permitted when dealing with people who owe money.
In addition the government will be
examining the bailiff fee structure, and introducing mandatory training for new entrants to the profession and a new and robust certification process. The changes follow a consultation carried out between the Ministry of Justice and members of the bailiff profession. The need for change within the profession follows months of lobbying by members of the profession as well as complaints from members of the public and constant scrutiny and criticism by the media.
