Tamariz has also unveiled details of


the tourist board’s new ‘I discovered Ecuador’ marketing campaign and named adventure, culture and ecotourism as focus areas. Peru is also focusing on luxury


tourism, with the UK named as one of 15 markets that its tourist board is targeting with a £5million campaign across print, online and outdoor media. It is aiming for a nine per cent rise in visitor numbers by the end of 2014. “This campaign reinforces the message that our country has excellent hotel infrastructure with luxury resorts while still maintaining our captivating historic legacy,” says Jose Luis Silva Martinot, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism. Both countries are also bolstering their airport infrastructure. A new international airport is scheduled to open in


Quito this month and, with the longest runway in Latin America, is set to open up the country to larger aircraft and new routes. In Peru, work has begun on a new airport in the city of Pisco and plans have also been revealed for a new airport in Cuzco.


What’s new Hotels: Lima’s fi rst boutique hotel


opened for business last month in the bohemian suburb of Barranco. The Andean Experience-owned Hotel B has 17 suites, a spa and restaurant. Quito’s Casa Gangotena hotel has introduced two special packages – a culinary tour of the Ecuadorian capital city and an ‘Andean energy restoration treatment’ that uses herbs, fl owers and natural essences to recreate a traditional healing ritual. Galapagos Safari Camp, a luxury,


tented accommodation option on Santa Cruz, has launched a three- bedroom family suite and a six-day family safari programme. The 207-room, new-build Hilton Lima Mirafl ores opened late last year in the upscale suburb of the capital, becoming the Hilton group’s fi rst managed hotel in Peru. The JW Marriott Cuzco opened last winter, becoming the group’s fi rst hotel in the city. The hotel stands on the site of a colonial monastery


and incorporates historic elements in its design. It has two restaurants, a spa, fi tness centre and pool. Attractions: The Dakar Rally took


place in Peru, Chile and Argentina in January, travelling along the Pacifi c coast, across deserts and into the Andes. It is the fi fth consecutive year that the endurance event has been held in South America – since moving from North Africa due to safety concerns – and is now becoming synonymous with the region. Peru was named Best Culinary Destination in the World at last year’s World Travel Awards Grand Final, beating off better-known foodie destinations such as France, China, Italy, Spain and Thailand. Rainbow Tours has introduced a


new trip to lesser-known Northern Peru. The eight-day itinerary takes in Lima, Trujillo and Chiclayo, visiting archaeological sites such as the Sun and Moon Temples, Chan Chan, Sipan, Tucume and the Royal Tombs Museum. It is priced from £1,965pp including international fl ights. Cruising: Journey Latin America is among UK operators now selling cruises on the new, luxury Anakonda, an 18-cabin vessel that takes to the waters of the Ecuadorian Amazon this May. Owned and operated by Advantage Travel Ecuador, it has an alfresco dining room, library room, large sun deck and cabins with air-conditioning, French balconies and panoramic windows.
