Kentucky
Why sell it? The state is known for horses and bourbon and there are lots of ways visitors can experi- ence both. However the current marketing campaign ‘There’s Only One Kentucky’ focuses on places and events unique to the state: Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Na- tional Historical Park, Hodgenville; Corvette manufacturing plant (tours available) and Museum, Bowling Green; International Bluegrass Music Museum, Owensboro; and the Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville. What’s new? The state is further developing its Bourbon Trail, a scenic drive through rolling Blue- grass Hills. Opening in Louisville later this year is the Evan Williams Experience, a tour and tasting of Kentucky’s fi rst distillery.
Louisiana Why sell it? The star turn is New Orleans, now recovered after Hur- ricane Katrina. The Big Easy draws visitors to its unique architecture, cobbled streets and French Quarter, known for its live entertainment. Lafayette is the centre of Cajun culture, which can be explored through several living museums., while the state’s 180 miles of bayous and marshlands – with wildlife that includes alligators, and beaches –can be explored along the Creole Nature Trail. What’s new? The city of Opelousas has a ‘hot’ festival weekend planned June (1-2) with spices, music –including Zydeco, Cajun and R&B – pageants, cooking demos, music and a cultural workshop.
Tourism talk:
“Feedback from operators, travel agents and consumers suggests that
New Orleans and Louisiana will be hot destinations in 2013. “This month New Orleans hosts Mardi Gras, but across the state Louisiana stages over 600 fairs and festivals themed on music, literature, food, cocktails and even voodoo so there is a party for everyone. We hope river cruises on the Mississippi will be big again this year, as they are a wonderful way to travel through some of the great cities of the South. We are committed to supporting the trade and will be taking part in individual, partner and Visit USA training events this year.” Jody Hanson, Louisiana Offi ce of Tourism and New Orleans C&VB
Mississippi Why sell it? Mississippi’s star is rising on the back of it being the historical home of the blues (this is where Robert Johnson ‘sold his soul’ to the devil (in Rosedale). Clarksdale, in the Mississippi Delta, is the home of the Delta Blues Museum. Tupelo, in northeast Mississippi, is where Elvis Presley was born. Visitors can tour the small, humble two-room shotgun house that was his childhood home. The state has 26 miles of white-sand beaches on the Gulf Coast. What’s new? To help visitors plan their tour of the state’s musical heritage the Mississippi Development Authority has launched a Mississippi Blues Trail that winds its way to sites honouring B.B. King, Muddy Waters and others.
