CITIES & BEACHES: Far East
T
he Far East is a consistently popular destination with British holidaymakers, and it’s
not especially diffi cult to see why. The sheer number and diversity of the region’s travel highlights are remarkable. The beaches, the food, the cities, the culture, the value for money – all these factors and more
combine to create somewhere that keeps clients coming back time and time again.
It means that the prospect of twinning a beach holiday with a city break – thereby creating a richly varied overall package – is an extremely attractive one. “If you only go to a beach, you’re not going to see as much of Asian life,” explains Neill Prothero, Product Manager Far East at Cox & Kings. “By incorporating a city too you
really get to feel that Far East energy – the bustling nightlife, the markets, the history and the streetlife.” Any number of Asian cities put themselves forward as prime candidates for a twin-centre break, but fi ve of the very best are Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), all of which can be reached by direct fl ight from the uK. Between them, these fi ve cities offer the potential for real adventure and
experiences ranging from the foodie thrills of Bangkok and the neon jungle of Hong Kong to the scooter- fi lled streets of Saigon and the shopping heartland of KL. The most natural option for clients is to start a holiday with time exploring a city, then travel on to a beach; Thailand is almost in a class of its own in this regard “The country offers so much variety,” says Oscar Lopera, Product Manager Far East at Travel 2. “The spectacular thing about Thailand is its diversity, and the range of experiences available. And it’s never been so accessible to combine different Thai regions in one holiday.” The islands of Phuket, on the
west coast, and Ko Samui, on the east, are the two most obvious spots for Thai beach breaks, but the different possibilities run into the dozens. Looking elsewhere, a Top Five of classic Far East island boltholes might also include Bali in Indonesia and Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia.
