Cool runnings in a Cadillac

the extraordinary energy of outdoor fi tness expert, Jim Czarnecki. Our aim was to follow the former railroad corridor on the 11-mile Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, named after the Native American phrase for ‘at the in-between pleasant river’. Jim’s fi tness company owns a vast array of bikes ideally suited to exploring the Berkshires, but my trip was on the fl at, along the shore of the Cheshire Reservoir where the biggest challenge was avoiding the hoards of Canadian Geese that inhabit the route!

A heady mix of university culture Now on to my fi nal state and a very stylish city to complete

my road trip of New England. New Haven in Connecticut is home to free concerts, fi ne arts and great cafes. Dominated by Yale University, one of the state’s oldest universities, New Haven is bursting with life and everything that goes with a popular university town. The town oozes history and stunning campus architecture, with enticing walkways and alleys leading from one courtyard to the next. My brief visit involved a culinary walking tour of the town

starting at Claire’s landmark vegetarian restaurant and a slice of her irresistible organic Lithuanian coffee cake. The choice of eating and drinking venues seems endless and before long we were in 116 Crown Street, featuring a heady mix of cocktails. ‘Four Thieves’ won my vote, described as a combination of organic house-infused blueberry vodka, cointreau, lime juice, simple syrup and soda – served on the rocks. A free festival in the city park was the perfect way to end

my New England adventure in a party atmosphere and surrounded by new friends.
