It could be a concert in a white clapboard chapel, a dance in a hastily converted fire station or an exhibition in a modern hotel – all played out under the firey glow of the spectacular east coast fall colours. For nearly 30 years, every July (5-14, 2013) Sir Winston Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton, Alberta, has played host to a cast of street performers – ranging from musicians to acrobats to unicyclists to fireeaters –from all over the world. Over 1,500 outdoor shows take place over the 10 days, alongside workshops for juggling and busking which allow the audience to get involved. The streets become a riot of colour, laughter and camaraderie, as bizarrely-dressed artists mingle with locals and tourists, creating magic and not a little mayhem. The world’s largest jazz festival, which this year will run from June 28 to July 7, sees Québec’s French-Canadian metropolis come alive when 3,000 musicians and public entertainers from over 30 countries perform at 1,000 concerts. Two-thirds of the performances in the programme are free and venues vary from concert halls to al fresco stages. Several artists are not always strictly traditional jazz players either – last year’s line-up saw acts as varied as Seal, Norah Jones and Liza Minnelli take to the stage.
