CITIES & BEACHES: Far East
Away from the big hitters, of course,
it’s important to remember that the region as a whole offers almost boundless potential for customers in search of less-established twin- centre destinations. Countries like the Philippines, China and Cambodia continue to improve their own city-plus-beach potential, and today’s network of low-cost carriers around Southeast Asia is more
comprehensive than ever.
“We’re seeing more demand for creative pairings,” says Nick Ghosh, Southeast Asia
Product Executive at Audley Travel. “Saigon with Phu Quoc in Vietnam is a great example, as is Siem Reap with Song Saa in Cambodia.”
What’s new Airlines: Phuket recently
Sea kayaking in Palawan, Philippines; Seoul in the city, Korea.
received a double boost, when Emirates launched a service to the Thai island in early December and Thomson Airways announced direct Phuket fl ights from late 2013 on ‘jetlag-reducing’ 787 Dreamliners (assuming Boeing sort out the aircraft’s current ‘problems’). In Malaysia, national carrier Malaysia Airlines joins the oneworld Alliance this month, news which follows the airline’s
new daily A380 service to KL in mid-2012. Air New Zealand has
announced an end to its London-Hong Kong service
from March, while Hong Kong Airlines suspended its all-business class fl ights from Gatwick in September. Cathay Pacifi c will have its new business class product on all Hong Kong-London fl ights from the spring. Elsewhere, Singapore Airlines has recently added a fourth daily fl ight to Singapore from London.
MALAYSIA’S TWO FOR ONE BY BEN LERWILL “In many ways, Kuala Lumpur isn’t your typical Far East city. Its daily pace is measured rather than breathless, and there’s not such an all-out sensory assault as there is in some cities. “It was a precursor to an island break in Langkawi, where platinum-white sands and vivid green palms provided a tropical setting in which it was impossible not to feel spoiled. One blast of Malaysia is a treat – two in one trip is a luxury.”
