Florida Why sell it? Ever since Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon first set foot on the beach at ‘La Florida’, St Augustine in 1513 Europeans have been attracted by its sunshine, natural areas and, more recently, theme parks. Suggest combining one

of the Carolinas or Georgia with a Gulf Coast beach destination such as Fort Myers, upmarket Naples, Tampa, Clearwater and St Petersburg, or the Panhandle beach resort of Pensacola with the unspoilt sandy Gulf Shores in Alabama. What’s new? ‘Viva Florida’ is a year-long celebration of the Sunshine State’s 500 years of visitors, with events from re-enactments to festivals and living history activities taking place across the whole state, from St Augustine, Pen- sacola and Tallahassee to the Everglades and Florida Keys. The first Humphrey Bogart Film Festival will be held May 2-5 in Key Largo. It will feature a formal Bogart Ball, an outdoor screening of Casablanca, memorabilia and tours on the restored African Queen.

Georgia Why sell it? Atlanta is the South’s main gateway and has plenty of attractions of its own, like the World of Coca Cola and the Inside CNN Stu- dio Tour. On the coast, Savan- nah has a timeless Southern charm while offshore islands like Tybee, St Simons, Jekyll and Cumberland ensure that Georgia is a beach destina- tion with a difference. Spend a night in Athens, home of the band R.E.M, with its numerous live-music bars, or visit the antebellum homes and rocking chairs in Milledgeville and Madison. What’s new? An hour south of Atlanta, Callaway Gardens (callawaygardens.com) in Pine Mountain is renovating all 274 rooms in its Mountain Creek lodge. The upgrades at a resort known for its family attractions such as a beach area, a butterfly conservatory, nature and cycle trails and two championship golf course are expected to be complete by April 1. Delta Air Lines will add a third daily Heathrow-Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport service from March 31.
