According to the National Gardening Association the average annual spending on lawn and garden activities and products per household in America is a little over $350 per year. A huge industry in America, U.S. house- holds spent $29.1 billion on their lawns and gardens in 2011. Over half of the gardening population (51 percent) now shops at garden centers within large home im- provement stores or discount stores. The 2012 National Gardening Survey states that only 17 percent of house- holds shop at local nurseries and garden centers and 14 percent shop at local hardware stores. This is a sad statistic for gardeners for it is verifi cation of the fear that small independent garden centers are becoming a thing of the past. Fortunately the survey did show that the youngest age bracket prefers the local hardware store and garden center to the large discount stores, so perhaps that trend will change in the future.
