The royal baby arrives: Remotely-controlled Q-Ball equipment from Camera Corps televised the world’s media as they reported in vast numbers on the birth of the new heir to the United Kingdom throne in London. The BBC used the system to capture high definition footage of the entrance to St Mary’s Hospital on 22 July and of the media covering the event. “Q-Ball gave the BBC crew much greater freedom in where the camera was positioned,” explained Camera Corps managing director Laurie Frost.

tITN picks Custom Consoles for its HQ Independent Television News has chosen a large studio control desk from Custom Consoles as part of an upgrade at its headquarters in Gray’s Inn Road, London. Measuring over 8.8m, the desk occupies almost the full width of Studio Control Suit A. “The new control desk is based on Custom Consoles’ Module-R series which enabled us to configure exactly the structure we needed without the expense of a fully bespoke design,” said ITN’s head of Broadcast Engineering, Paul Flook. “The desk is wide enough to accommodate a production team of up to seven people. To achieve this within the space available, we specified a configuration giving extra front- to-back depth to the camera control and lighting section at the right-hand of the desk, a Strand lighting mixer being mounted at 45° across a corner section.” The desk is fitted with 10 individually adjustable Ergotron LX monitor arms plus dual monitor support.

Loudness Sound Rental & Services supplied the audio system for the ceremony, choosing the console, as well as an L-Acoustics PA and Shure wireless microphones and IEMs. “The sound quality and reliability of the SD8 were major reasons for choosing it, of course, but in these circumstances its fast setup and user-friendliness were very important,” said Loudness Sound Rental & Services’ Fernanda Lemos. The SD8 was used to mix live audio for the stadium audience, as well as

DPP updates standard The UK’s Digital Production Partnership has revealed key features of its common industry Technical and Metadata standards for file-based delivery of TV programmes, which go live in early September. The company’s Metadata Application, which allows users to enter and embed the required data into the MXF programme files, making them compliant with the AS-11 DPP standard, has been updated to support these revisions to the Standards. Kevin Burrows, controller of Technical Broadcast and Distribution, C4 and DPP Technical Standards chair, said, “Having an agreed UK standard for file-based delivery across the industry that we can build on, is of great benefit in ensuring ease of exchange and the ability to incorporate future requirements.” www.digitalproductionpartner
