46 TVBEurope IBC2013 Show Preview Sony

Sports broadcasting from the ground up

By Adrian Pennington

THE NEW studio production facility serving BT Sport’s suite of channels since 1 August features a range of Sony equipment. This includes three MVS-7000X and five MVS-3000 switchers, 15 HDC-2400 studio cameras, as well as the latest Sony TriMaster OLEDs rolled out across the three new studios at the facility located at Queen Elizabeth II Park. Sony worked in partnership with Megahertz, systems integrator on the project, and the BT Sport project team to design and implement the facility which produces live and recorded programming for BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN. Jamie Hindhaugh, COO, BT Sport said: “At the core of our new studios build is a spirit of collaboration that brings the best of industry — and sometimes competitors — working together toward a common aim: to make the BT Sport studios a world-class hub for the best ideas and talent. We believe talent attracts talent and

production facilities this year, including at dock10’s studios which has purchased 30, and at Fountain Studios. Sony says the selection was made after “a rigorous head-to- head assessment process, where products from six different suppliers were tested by an independent review group, including technology staff from the BBC.” With an increasing number

our partnership with Sony as a partner has helped us to foster that mind-set.” Sony sales director

Dave Dougall commented: “Working with BT Sport gave us an exciting opportunity to help shape a new sporting broadcaster from the ground up and deliver a best-of-breed technology solution that will guarantee the most compelling coverage.”

Meanwhile, Fountain Studios and dock10 have joined the list of production companies to invest in PVM and BVM OLED monitors. Sony has sold over 20,000 units worldwide of its Trimaster EL OLEDs since the launch of the range in 2011. Having seen a surge in demand for OLED monitoring this year, the company’s BVM and PVM series monitors have been installed in several high-profile

of productions being shot using more than a dozen cameras at Fountain Studios, chief engineer Craig Church undertook a refurbishment of the vision control room, including an upgrade of the monitors from the existing CRT screens. Having consulted with the lighting director and vision engineers, Church opted for three BVM-F170As, and two PVM-1741As, purchased through Visual Impact. “The vision control room is a critical position for lighting directors and vision engineers who work on large-scale live shows such as Britain’s Got Talent,” said Church. “In order to provide the best images possible, we wanted a better alternative to LCD screens, which don’t provide the same vibrant colour or black level that OLED does and Sony’s monitors fitted the bill perfectly.” 12.A10

Space saver: The new collapsible F8 LED Fresnel from Zylight

Zylight

Foldable F8 Fresnel fixture

A COMPACT new LED light that folds flat (collapsing to less than 10cm thick) for easy transport and storage has been launched by Zylight. The F8 LED Fresnel is available in tungsten (3200K) or daylight (5600K) versions, with a CRI (colour rendering index) score of 97 or better. The fully dimmable F8 has an adjustable beam spread (16-70º) for even coverage for widescreen productions, and maintains single shadow traditional Fresnel beam shaping through a 20cm Schott glass lens, with a patented focussing system for spot and flood. While it draws only 100W, it is claimed to approach the light output of a traditional 1000W Fresnel. It is also water resistant (IP54) and can be powered by a worldwide AC adapter or standard 14.4v camera battery. “We’ve designed the F8 to

be a versatile, rugged light for studio and location work,” said Zylight’s president, Joe Arnao. “It’s bright like an HMI but better suited for run-and-gun news ENG applications — you just snap on a battery and go. In the studio, the F8 saves space and costs less to operate than traditional Fresnels.” It comes with the ZyLink

wireless technology, which links multiple Zylights under simultaneous remote control, so several F8s can be grouped together. It can also be controlled via DMX. 11.F56
