NEWS INBRIEF The Workflow
ToolsOnAir uses Sonnet for TV Station in a Mac ToolsOnAir Broadcast Engineering has integrated Sonnet’s xMac mini Server, a Thunderbolt-to-PCIe 2.0 expansion system, and a 1U rackmount enclosure for the Mac mini computer into its new ‘TV Station in a Mac’ solution. The company has combined the xMac mini Server with key components from its just:Broadcast Suite to create a Mac mini-based appliance with a central storage system to support a live, 12-camera production workflow. It is able to capture up to 24 SD or 12 HD channels in ProRes HQ within 6U of rack space.

DiGiCo chooses Swiss Tonspur
Tonspur has been appointed DiGiCo’s exclusive Swiss distributor, after the company’s involvement in the Montreaux Jazz Festival. “We have been coordinating the audio for Montreux since 2007 and our first experience with DiGiCo was when they became the official console sponsor in 2009,” said Tonspur owner Hansjürg Meier. “We immediately realised that there was an enormous difference in sound quality, compared to other digital mixing desks. ”

The solution found was Metus Ingest, running on an HP Z620 workstation
Much of the action is
captured by multiple discrete remote head cameras. Its existing fixed rig didn’t have 1080p output, so it had to be replaced by six Panasonic AW- HE60S PTZ cameras, supplied by Visual Impact. These not only offer full HD capabilities but, crucially, infrared functions for filming the bedroom scenes. The cameras are controlled by two daisy- chained Panasonic RP50 devices, so that the crew can capture all the action at high quality. “It’s a cost effective solution
that’s simple to set up and operate. The pictures have been easy to match with the PMW500 material and we’re delighted we upgraded,” says Lurcuck.
True calling: True North’s new Avid editing suites have just gone online in Manchester
“What really
appealed to us was the codec freedom. Recording each
stream as a 50Mbps XDCAM file gives us high quality,
Tapeless, diskless... and card-less The other element of the production process they wanted to address was iso recording. “We originally captured three feeds via a Blackmagic 16x16 SDI matrix, using Datavideo HDR-55 hard disk recorders. These produce very good compressed files and are great value for money — especially as they use standard 2.5-inch drives — but we had issues ingesting the data in Avid.
broadcast-approved HD footage that’s edit ready,” Andrew Lurcuck, True North Productions
True grit: GB Labs’ Space storage proved to be a cost-effective choice for True North We wanted to see if we could avoid the long re-wrapping
process without capturing massive DNxHD files.” The solution they found was Metus Ingest, running on an HP Z620 workstation. It is multi-stream iso recording and transcoding software that runs in a standard Windows environment, using Blackmagic Design Decklink cards to ingest multiple concurrent feeds. Incoming signals can be recorded, transcoded and stored in any or many formats.
“What really appealed to us
was the codec freedom. Recording each stream as a 50Mbps XDCAM file gives us high quality, broadcast- approved HD footage that’s edit ready,” he says.
“Once the system is bedded
in, we plan to experiment, capturing each stream into two cloned files for data security. With the Z620 and a Sonnet 16TB attached RAID system, we have the speed, capacity and redundancy to replace multiple systems with this new
integrated solution. It’s an exciting proposition.” The workstation connects to the company’s Ethernet network, so that files can be transferred to the Space tier one storage for shared editing, archiving and, in the near future, inclusion in an enterprise-wide media asset management system.
