Alchemist follows new software path

By Michael Burns

SNELL IS demonstrating a new approach that offers its products in software form, calling the framework Snell OnDemand. Alchemist OnDemand (Alchemist OD) software, for frame rate conversion of media files, is the first of these OnDemand offerings, aiming to achieve cost savings through the use of standard IT hardware.

Supporting content in standards from

QCIF to 4K UHDTV and utilising Snell’s Ph.C (phase correlation) technology, Alchemist OD converts incoming files into the standards and formats required by customers, on their chosen deployment platform. Snell claimed that Alchemist OD provides the world’s highest-

quality frame rate conversion in software, addressing international programme delivery, integration of movies or adding user-generated content into content schedules. The company is also

showcasing Alchemist Ph.C-HD LIVE at IBC, offering frame rate conversion for live TV applications. Alchemist Ph.C-HD

unveiled. These include an HTML5-based browser- independent interface to give users a broader choice among web browsers, a published web services API to allow simple interactions among business systems, as well as complete integration with Snell’s ICE Channel in a Box and Morpheus automation systems.

Momentum

now also includes support for a broader range of external systems, including

Emotion EFF loudness

Converting to gold: Alchemist Ph.C-HD LIVE is claimed by Snell to offer the ‘gold standard’ in frame rate conversion

LIVE offers HD and 3Gbps conversions for 50Hz and 59Hz signals, with options available for SD, Dolby E, and enhanced timecode management. Meanwhile, new features for

Snell’s Momentum workflow- automated media asset management and resource planning system have been

detection and correction for compliance

with the latest global loudness standards, Pitch Blue and Javelin support for streamlined delivery of file-based content, and Telestream Vantage for integration of QC and transcode workflows. Vidchecker has also been added to the library of supported quality control systems. 8.B70

Standing Ovations in France Merging Technologies

By Paul Watson

FRENCH RENTAL house Puy du Fou has ditched its old hard disk equipment for Merging Technologies’ state-of- the-art Ovation, and is reaping the benefits.

What clinched the deal,

Merging says, is the fact that the Ovation system can be relied upon to operate 24/7, is easy to use, and boasts a huge range of options. Suitably convinced after a

demo from Olivier Montagnon of specialist Merging dealer 44.1, Puy du Fou decided to invest, and utilised its new toy on several outdoor shows put on in Les Epesses, in the Vendée region of France: The Knights Of The Round Table and The Phantom Birds’ Dance. For both shows, Puy du Fou installed a total of five Ovation Gold Native systems loaded on to the rack-mounted servers and using 16 I/O RME HDSPAES32 PCIe cards and USB Sync cards for the timecode connection to Ovation and the Pyramix editing software. It was important that Ovation

was also compatible with the Medialon show control software; and in addition to interfacing with Ovation, Medialon is able to control the lights and effects for the whole shows, which have the audio output from the Ovations routed to a mixing console which also takes the timecode and sends it to the Medialon PC. Six tracks of audio on the

Ovations are used for alternative languages as the major shows in Puy du Fou offer a choice of English, Dutch, Italian, German, Spanish and Russian. 8.E96
