Cooke expansion
Cooke Optics will extend its factory and workforce in Leicester, UK to accommodate the sustained and increasing demand for its lenses. A growing order book for Cooke’s new range of Anamorphic/i lenses, as well as continuing demand for the miniS4/I, 5/i and S4/i ranges, have necessitated the factory expansion. Cooke will add a further 300m2 to house more assembly and projection facilities as well as an R&D laboratory. A 10% increase in the workforce will be required. “As the digital camera revolution continues, people want the best PL lenses to tell their stories,” said Les Zellan, chairman and owner, Cooke Optics. “We’re gratified by the demand we face for our lenses, particularly the recent interest that our
Anamorphic/i lenses have garnered, and have taken these measures to increase production while maintaining our high standards.”

Amedia debuts pay TV in Moscow with Harris
By Fergal Ringrose
MOSCOW-BASED AMEDIA, a TV and film production company, launched two channels on May 31: Amedia Premium and Amedia 1, both simulcasted in HD and SD. The two new channels, along with the existing Amedia 2 channel, are distributed nationally through cable, satellite and IPTV operators. To bring the new channels to
air, Amedia is building a new broadcast production facility based on a Harris Broadcast file-based workflow solution. On the project, Harris is working with local systems integrator RTV RTC. The new facility incorporates
nine Versio playout systems, providing redundancy for the four channels plus one extra channel that supports preview functions throughout the broadcast production centre. On this project, automation of the four channels plus the preview channel is achieved using Harris’ ADC automated content

management and distribution system running a list redundancy. A large Harris Broadcast Selenio media convergence platform will provide all encoding (MPEG-2/H.264), file transcoding and audio processing. Other Harris Broadcast components include a Platinum router, 6800+ distribution equipment and MSA-100 multi-source analysers for monitoring H.264 transport streams. QuiC Pro software handles file-based QC of content, while the company’s
Invenio Motion media asset management system controls the movement of file-based content throughout the workflow. To launch the new channels, Amedia signed multiyear agreements with HBO, Showtime Networks, CBS Broadcasting, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, Starz and other networks and studios. The first season of new Amedia channels includes 40 TV series premieres totalling 30 hours a week.

HbbTV By Fergal Ringrose
THREE HBBTV technology vendors – Screen, Icareus and
Digisoft.tv — presented a new HbbTV toolbox for broadcasters at Broadcast Asia last month. Screen’s head of Interactive Sales Daimon Hall said: “The HbbTV Toolbox, which can be hosted in the cloud or locally installed, integrates with the delivery of video feeds in to an HbbTV environment to provide multiple options for how a TV programme is viewed. This includes second screen devices and the web.” Hall added: “The Toolbox
provides broadcasters with a simple but effective means to offer rich value-added content but with the ability to format around sponsored pages and insert advertising interleaved with relevant content.” In addition to extended
viewing options such as providing racing data and football results, the HbbTV Toolbox facilitates the simple placement and management of services like interactive advertising, EPG banner advertising and branded or even seasonal themes. A smart feature of the
Toolbox is the remote access available to advertisers’ marketing agencies. With variable degrees of trusted status levels, an advertising customer’s creative agency can insert adverts, promotional copy and imagery remotely. The decision on whether an agency can switch the material to air is made by the broadcaster.
