4 TVBEurope Opinion By Fergal Ringrose

STAND BY for our 16-page Beyond HD Masters Wrap-Up report this issue, starting page 16! You’ll also find video interviews from some of the speakers dotted throughout the Wrap-Up in our iPad Edition, and at www.tvbeurope.com. The goal for our event at

BAFTA last month was to provide genuine thought leadership on the key questions surrounding Ultra HD, 4K and 3D. When and how do we move ‘beyond HD’ in European broadcasting — if at all? What are the drivers and

barriers, in terms of consumer electronics, broadcasting technologies and production issues? How should European broadcast organisations be planning strategically for this future roadmap? Following the event we were contacted by Milan Krsljanin, director of Group Business Development at sponsor company ARRI. He said, “thank you very much for the great event, it was beyond my expectations. It was definitely worthwhile participating and I found the content exceptionally informative, topical and relevant.” Delegate Milko Kostadinov,

sales representative Europe for Toshiba, commented, “thank you for the excellent organisation. I am very happy to have taken part and am looking forward to applying the knowledge I acquired.” Peter Jones from FOR-A got in touch, “just to say thanks for the event: great programme, well-paced and very informative.” Speaker Andy Quested, BBC HD & 3D, said “it was a really good day and thanks for inviting me.” Informative, topical,

worthwhile, relevant, well-paced, acquisition of knowledge: while digesting all welcome incoming feedback from the event and planning for the future, we would like to once more thank the sponsor companies who enabled Beyond HD Masters 2013. Platinum Sponsor was Sony Professional Solutions Europe; Gold Sponsors were ARRI, Blackmagic Design, DekTec, Emotion Systems, procam.tv, Screen Systems and Sisvel

Looking to IBC As you may know, TVBEurope will again publish The IBC Daily this year on behalf of the IBC Partnership. Editorial deadlines we have set for news stories from exhibiting companies are 15 July for the Preview Issue and 5 August for the pre-printed sections of the show issues. Exhibitors know that The IBC Daily drives business to their stands at the show. In these uncertain economic times the pressure is on everyone to maximise business opportunities that can be converted into solid revenues. We have proven that The IBC Daily is a business opportunity for those IBC exhibitors who work with our team to achieve the strongest possible impact at the event. We employ what we believe is the best international editorial team in the business to work with exhibitors in each Hall of the RAI before and during the show. Our journalists know their subject areas and work hard before and during the show to produce the best news and innovation stories. This year, Ian McMurray

will cover Halls 1, 4 and 5; Heather McLean Halls 2 and 3; Carolyn Giardina Halls 6 and 7; Michael Burns Hall 8 Video & Broadcast, and Paul Watson covers Hall 8 Audio & Radio.

Finally, in response to my

story about Sony HD Studios at TV3 Ireland in May issue, I received a note from Ronan Kelly at RTE. “You wrote that TV3 ‘never sees a penny’ of the license fee,” said Kelly. “Is that true? Do they receive no money from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound & Vision Fund?” I was wrong and Kelly

was right: TV3 does receive funds from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound & Vision Fund, directly (through its own programming applications) and indirectly (though the programming applications of independent producers).
