Icy extremes: DP Alessandro Beltrame from Italy headed to the South Pole for two documentaries for The Antarctica Project. Using a tripod system by Sachtler, part of Vitec Videocom, he spent a month at the South Pole — with temperatures dropping to -50°C (58ºF), a real test for the crew and the equipment. Relying on the FSB 6 by Sachtler, the patented damping system of the heads with very finely designed step-shifting uses a special lubrication grease which guarantees smooth tilt and pan movements, even in extreme temperatures of -40 to +60°C (-40 to +140°F).

White House Down Director Roland Emmerich and cinematographer Anna Foerster, ASC used Codex Onboard Recorders on the Sony Pictures feature film White House Down. The film stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and depicts a paramilitary invasion of the White House in Washington, DC. “Codex is a fully developed, fantastic way of working,” said Foerster. Emmerich agreed: “The Codex Recorders did what every tool should do: perform so flawlessly
Codex on
that we forget they are there.” Codex recorded images in ARRIRAW format, and SxS cards simultaneously recorded ProRes 444 images as a backup and to capture metadata for visual effects. There was no colour correction on the set. A fibre optic link connected the DIT data station with the SAN at the Technicolor offices, cutting down on transfer time and ensuring copies of the data in two separate secure sites. On location, shuttle drives were used.

Monitoring transmitters ORS (Austrian Broadcasting Services) has chosen IT service management software developed by iET Solutions to centralise all the information needed to monitor and manage its national network of transmitter stations at around 450 locations. The iET ITSM software was chosen for its flexibility. Today ORS manages around 80,000 data records using a configuration management database and broadcasting database, which was implemented using software from iET Solutions. Norbert Grill, ORS managing director, said: “ORS is responsible for almost all TV and radio programme providers in Austria, as well as for digital television. Our systems have to run as smoothly as the broadcasting of our TV programmes.” iET Solutions’ Austrian partner, Softpoint Electronic, implemented the IT service management software, iET ITSM, within a year. The system went live in the middle of 2012.
