30 TVBEurope Forum Transcoding
That same report also states, ‘Additionally, the market isn’t seeing enough solutions that address the key concerns around scalability, agility and efficiency’. What could those solutions entail?
Will the situation involving transcoding get worse before it gets better?
Devlin: Define ‘worse’! Will a lot of transcoding be sold that isn’t really needed? Yes. Will a lot of poor transcoding create awful, toxic files in the industry that the key transcode brands have to fix? Yes. Is that worse? Probably.
I think the economic benefits
Paul Turner: “There really is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ transcoder”
Devlin: A mix of commercial and technological solutions that allow a company to own and operate enough transcode capacity for their mean capacity, but scale into the cloud at peak times. Currently profile management, control standards and QC block this technically and many cloud commercial models block this commercially. Sassoli: Current technology solutions do exist that are highly scalable; able to fit in different network environments; and converged to address simplicity of operations plus reduce total cost of ownership. Trow: It’s important that solutions don’t support parallel infrastructures. The industry needs coherent deployments that exploit commonalities because the duplication that’s currently required between services like linear, VoD, and catch-up TV is not sustainable. Broadcasters require unified platforms that support multiple services.
Simone Sassoli: “HEVC holds great promise, and will have major impacts on transcoders — possibly resulting in ‘forklifts’ of non-HEVC-capable technology”
Walker: Our ContentAgent
addresses these concerns and provides encoding, media management and metadata tracking with a complete toolset for automating the transcoding, management and distribution of digital media files. Its user interface has been designed to be operated by non-technical staff using a graphical node-based workflow tool which allows them to build their own workflows and apply automated decision processes. Wymbs: Because Elemental
controls its software stack, it can offer customers a high degree of scalability and agility in terms of supporting multiple codecs, delivery standards and content protection technologies. In terms of H.265 support, we believe Elemental is the only encoding solution in the world today that’s available as a seamless software upgrade and can run in realtime while maintaining high-level profiles, for example 4K, 1080p30, and so on.
of file-based transcode and delivery will only be fully realised when we look at it as a business transaction and fix the media, the metadata and the transaction as a holistic business process. That way the business will drive the technology and we might get to a ‘better’ place where premium brands like AmberFin will be able to deliver high quality at commodity prices because the ROI of a good transcode is understood by all. Ferreira:We believe it will
get worse in the near-term, because we, as an industry, haven’t yet reached a level of flexibility that allows us to cope with new formats. It will only get better if we strive to develop and deploy open protocols for building flexible and adaptable systems. Nann: In our view, while file
format fragmentation may continue to get worse — as new formats and specifications such as HEVC and MPEG-DASH join existing ones in common use — before getting better, the overall ‘transcoding’ picture is already improving from an operational standpoint, with
solutions recently becoming available like our Digital Rapids Transcode Manager software powered by the Kayak platform. These are designed to address the challenges described above. Sassoli: It will likely get more complicated with lingering question marks around MPEG-DASH adoption, and now HEVC. There is a great struggle between video service providers wanting stability and
see more and more ‘sidecar’ content in files, and there’s no doubt we’ll be faced with increasing delivery options. Walker:With file-based
workflow becoming the norm and with so many formats available choosing the right one for the right job is a never-ending quest. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel in some areas. In the UK the DPP must be commended for creating the

standardisation to allow them to launch mass scale services which support end users against the rush to introduce new technology by large consumer electronics and web vendors. Turner: That’s a pretty
provocative question. I would say that it will continue to be a challenging function to implement, as standards are always being added and changing. We will continue to
DPP file-based delivery specification. This is a very tightly defined specification, which anyone delivering long form programming to the BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and Sky will have to use. Wymbs: Transcoding is not a
problem, it’s an enabler. Until end users stop craving content on every device, video processing will play a pivotal role in making that happen.
