Rants and ramblings Bits and pieces from the editorial cutting-room floor
What’s this? Someone in a Santa hat in a February magazine? It turns out there’s an excellent reason for us to run this picture (and for the hat to be worn in the first place). This is none other than Jon Sidwick, European director of distributor TDMaverick, making his second appearance in this issue. Has he done a charity run, we hear you ask? Yes he has – and then some. In 2012, his 50th year, he set himself the challenge of running no fewer than 50 half-marathons – either officially organised ones or solo efforts, the latter logged on his GPS running watch. He achieved his goal in December, running the Stanwick Santa half-marathon – hence the headgear. Other notable locations for these runs were Sydney and San Francisco, as well as the London Marathon (which counts, of course, as two half- marathons back-to-back). Jon has put himself through
Occasionally in the past, we’ve used freelance journalists to report from CES, which takes place in Las Vegas at the start of January. This year, we know of at least one magazine from this industry that has sent staff there. While it’s primarily still a show for consumer products, it is potentially a place where
technologies with future relevance to the professional market might be sighted. However, it is also a place to see – what’s a good way to put this? – products whose benefits are hard to

all this to raise money for the audiovisual industry charity Vision, which helps blind and visually impaired children. He has raised more than €8,000 to date, but there’s still time to help boost his total – you can make a donation at

appreciate. Take, for example, this internet-enabled fridge. It doesn’t actually do what one might expect such a machine to do – it doesn’t order milk for you, or even send you a message to say that you’re running low. It just has an 8in WiFi- enabled touchscreen embedded in the door. “Check the morning weather, browse the web for recipes, explore your social networks or leave notes for your family – all from the
refrigerator door,” says the publicity material. Or, I don’t know, use a Post-It note? Or talk to someone?
This year we’ve seen a noted increase in events – both official product launches and informal get-togethers – on the Monday evening before ISE. Presumably this is one more manifestation of people’s desire to get the maximum benefit out of their time in Amsterdam. Either that, or we’ve suddenly become a lot more popular.
One of the more mundane tasks in putting together a magazine like this is ensuring that we have relevant web addresses for all the companies and organisations that we mention in our pages. While we were working on the audio networking feature in this issue on MADI technology (p22) we were looking for a webpage for the protocol. Our first stop, naturally, was
www.madi.com – but, while the address was valid, the content was not what we were looking for. It was a page about Monkey Anti-perspirant
Deodorant Inc. – the first simian personal hygiene product manufacturer that we’d come across. Actually, we’re not entirely certain that this is a genuine business at all. But is there any connection between sweaty monkeys and audio networks? Well, we’ve come across a few stinkers in our time…
