tyle: “There are only two types of music, good and bad. There’s no line
I won’t cross if I like what I’ve created.” Best known for: “‘Shooting Stars’ (album).” Tune of 2012: “M83 ‘Midnight City (Eric Prydz Private Remix)’.” Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2012: “Tom Fall.”
IN the midst of a huge world tour, Tydi proves difficult to pin down. We catch him while he’s in Israel, following a long flight from the US and prior to another one to the Czech Republic. There’s little more proof needed of just how huge a year Tyson Illingworth has had. So how has 2012 been? “Incredible as always! I’ve visited new countries and written loads of new songs and remixes,” he says. “I can’t complain. I’ve also been working on music with some bands that I’ve always
dreamed of collaborating with,” he says, mysteriously. “You’ll find out who they are soon!” Tydi’s also notched up another important ambition. “I succeeded at the cinnamon challenge,” he says, proving that his talents stretch further even than we thought! IAN ROULLIER
If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? “Probably a vampire, maybe that dude from Twilight. What girl doesn’t want that guy?” Should you play to the crowd or for yourself? “If you’re playing for yourself and the crowd likes it, then you’re a real artist who’s worthy of your fans.” What does EDM mean to you? “Electronic Dance Music! No seri- ously, it’s my life.” Should celebrities be DJs? “As long as they have talent. If you’re talking about Paris Hilton then no, she shouldn’t. They’re giving a bad name to a real art form.” Have you ever been thrown off the decks? “Not yet, thankfully!” Are you a DJ if you don’t beat match? “Are you a cook if you use microwave meals? Kind of, I guess. It’s just easier. “ Where’s the next dance music capital? “I really hope it’s in the Ukraine. People who know me will know why.”
Style: “Music.” Best known for: “Making and playing music.” Tune of 2012: “Dada Life ‘Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker’.” Breakthrough DJ/ producer of 2012: “Paris Hilton.”
THE rise of versatile talent Mat Zo continues, with the young DJ and producer acquiring a larger fanbase seemingly by the day. Release-wise, the wonky electro of the ‘Bipolar’ EP was a delight, but Zo’s main 2012 focus has been “finishing off my album and touring. I did my first full circle of the globe. I’ve also pissed off a lot of people accidentally.”
Overall, though, “it’s been quite a rollercoaster”, he says of 2012. “A lot of failures and a lot of triumphs, but overall I have grown from it.”
If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? “I would be able to sit down at a machine, let’s call it a computer, and punch some things into a pad with buttons, and magically make sounds that a lot of people like.” Should you play to the crowd or for yourself? “The key is getting to a point where playing to the crowd and playing for yourself are the same thing.” What does EDM mean to you? “It stands for Electronic Dance Music and it means dance music that was made electronically.” Should celebrities be DJs? “If they’re good DJs then great, if they aren’t then they could always date an already-famous DJ.” Have you ever been thrown off the decks? “Not exactly, but back in the day when I used to play at my friends’ parties, they would always get raided by police. Although, I al- ways booted long before the police got inside.” Are you a DJ if you don’t beat match? “Yes, but a really bad one.” Where’s the next dance music capital? “No idea, but somewhere in the north-west hemisphere.”
2013 will see Zo “releasing my album (finally) and trying to stop bitching on Twitter”. The Twitter sniping is fine by us, but we’re all ears for hearing his long-awaited full- length debut. TRISTAN PARKER
