ELECTRO REVIEWS Secrets

I Believe Tigrefair 6.0

This debut from Tim Rawlinson is a neat concoction of late-night dark flavoured electro that comes very much from the housier side of town. The soul diva vocal makes it feel a little dated in some respects but the wobbly lead lines add an edge of discord that steers it well clear of falling into the realms of cliché. Well worth keeping an eye out for the forthcoming debut album.

The Barking Dogs

Your High feat Tom Trago Gomma 5.0

Peaches

Burst! BNR

9.0

Peaches on Boys Noize Records seems like a dream team combination, and ‘Burst!’ is everything you hope it would be. Kicking off with a treated vocal that sounds like she has finally fully morphed into a female Iggy, this is probably the poppiest release ever on BNR. Descending basslines and rocked-up drums make for a potential club crossover classic. With UZ and Bart B More remixes making it playable on every kind of floor, Alex’s A&R and production talents have hit gold here.

BS1

Rust BNR Trax 7.0

Another three-tracker on BNR’s digital imprint where the idea of immediacy is what it’s all about. BS1 made a bit of a splash with their ‘Be As One’ debut and this time around their bouncy take on a jackhousey approach is to the fore. The title track has a stuttery stomp driven by Roland snare filtered rolls and fills and makes for a jittery, crackling six minutes.

Casino Gold

Ricochet EP Bad Life 8.0

Bad Life can seemingly do no wrong right now. There’s a level of constancy to most of their releases that is matched by only a few other labels I can think of.

This time out it’s ‘Ricochet’ and ‘Patterns’, two absolute stormers from Luke and Zack Matsuk, who reckon their music is “made for Friday nights at 2am when the softies go home but the rest of us turn the music even louder”. Amen to that.

Krucy Darkstar

The Otherworldly EP Arcade Pony 7.0

Lead track ‘Forget This Disco’ covers a lot of bases but does them all in some quite considerable style - a French Touch filtery feel comes complete with some Daft Punky stabs and chops, and results in it really rocking along with a demon disco roll. ‘Grave Robbers From Outer Space’ ups the tempo and intensity, and ‘Love Cassette’ ends it all on a late-night vibe. Worth checking out.

Militant Technology

Dust The Floor EP WSR 7.0

With a minimal press release not giving too much away, that’s exactly how I like it — let the music do the talking. ‘Skivers Not Strivers’ lays down a solid 4/4 that builds from almost nothing to a climax of mammoth proportions, whilst ‘Indigo’ opens out into a sunrise special. Uton’s remix of ‘Skivers’ takes it on an unnecessary pseudo brostep detour which detracts from the Fake Blood-ish simplicity of the original.

Cristian Croce and Nicola Mazzetti are immersed in the Milan scene as owners of one of the city’s main record shops and are well known party-starters with their Discosafari nights. Their first outing on Gomma is deeply percussive with lots of open spaces and room for the breathy, reverbed vocals snatches, but by the time the jazzy piano (ie. played by someone who obviously isn’t a piano player) slips in, it’s all got a little too self-absorbed.

The Deadstock 33s

Ritual EP Solitary Cyclist 8.0

One of the few UK DJs to truly deserve the epithet ‘legendary’, Justin Robertson debuts a new label dedicated to “the experimental, the fascinating, the other worldly” and baptises the imprint with a three-tracker under his own Deadstock 33s alias. ‘Ritual’ is an insistent echoey dub groover whilst ‘Jamit’ takes the bpms down to bring a funkier stomp to the fore, and ‘Watch Me’ weaves a perfect hypnotic dancefloor web.

The Mansisters

E.P. Phone Home EP My Favorite Robot 8.0

A Canadian label and Danish/ Icelandic artist link-up that makes for quite an interesting end result. With a bass and drum groove that could be mistaken for a Weatherall dubstyle subtle thumper, lead track ‘iZone’ sets out the stall for the following ‘Lille Du’ to move into a kind of Oizo weirdness, albeit underpinned by an unrelenting groove. ‘Free At Last’ continues the goodness with a snaking, slithery dancefloor feel.

Crean

Lord Fish Harth Records 6.0

An intriguing mix of barking dogs and bubbling basslines on this release from the independent label based in Toronto. A right little groover.

Punx Soundcheck

Machine Gun Elephant Hottwerk 6.0

A self-styled moombahcore tag suits this suitably skippy resonating rumble which is taken from the forthcoming album ‘I Feel Zombie’. Quirky in a good way.

Loco Dice

DAVID MCCARTHY electrodjmag@davidmccarthy.com

QUICKIES 6.0

Toxic EP Desolat

Simple yet strong is the way of things here, with stripped-back electro housey grooves providing some party- starting certainties.

Zombie Zombie

Illuminations Versatile Records 6.0

Taken from their forthcoming album ‘Rituels D’Un Nouveau Monde’ which is produced by Joakim, ‘Illuminations’ is an atmospheric live band- sounding crossover full of percussive flourishes and musiciany grooves.

FAKE BLOOD DIFFERENT

01. DABEULL ‘Skyy High’ Blood Music “Half of the Donovans. Amazing house record that manages to be both dark

abandoned spacecraft.”
