AN21

Style: “House.” Best known for: “Being the brother of Steve Angello.” Tune of 2012: “Steve Angello & Third Party ‘Lights’.” Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2012: “Third Party.”

ANTOINE Joseffson is Steve Angello’s brother (Angello also has Joseffson in his name), and although he says that’s what he’s probably best known for, it’s as AN21 that he’s been making waves in international house music circles. Ever since he used to jump on his older brother’s decks, Antoine has caught the house music bug and he’s now a key figure in the Size Records clan alongside his brother and Max Vangeli, Third Party and Tim Mason. With his brother winding up titanic triumvirate Swedish House Mafia at the end of this year to devote more time to Size Records matters, expect to

see even more of AN21 at various festivals next year, where the label will be hosting arenas themselves. “Finishing my ‘People Of The Night’ album with Max Vangeli was definitely the highlight of my year,” says the house jock, who named his album after the collaboration with Tiësto that appears on the long-player. “It took us two years to finalise everything, but it was worth it. The day it got released was the day my dream came true.” CARL LOBEN

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? “If I could teleport myself to all the shows, I’d be able to do double-ups every night!” Should you play to the crowd or for yourself? “I always try to tell what the crowd needs, and control them. But sometimes I throw something really crazy in just to see how they react.” What does EDM mean to you? “It’s so hard to tell these days, I think there’s a bit of EDM in everything. Even in my mum’s cooking.” Should celebrities be DJs? “I think they should be focusing on what they actually can do… or should all of us start becoming actors next year?” Have you ever been thrown off the decks? “I’ve been thrown off the decks by both cops and the military!” Are you a DJ if you don’t beat match? “With today’s technology it’s so easy to beat match, it’s almost like cheating. So I think the DJs should put their energy and time into doing something more creative instead.” Where’s the next dance music capital? “If anything can bring more DJs than Miami, it’s got to be Las Vegas. But who knows? Maybe we can all go to Mars one day?”

NEW ENTRY

54 STOMMY TRASH

“I’M loving the new stuff from Bromance,” says Australian DJ/ producer Tommy Trash, running his hand through his trademark long-and- flowing locks. “I also think the new stuff from Jacques Lu Cont is hot.” This year, Tommy says, he’s been “… focusing on making more originals and less remixes”. “I’ve been trying to work out the next phase of my sound,” he explains. “So I’ve been experimenting quite a lot along the way.”

As one of the few Australian DJs to work on the global circuit, Tommy says that

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? “Being able to teleport, so airports can be a thing of the past!” Should you play to the crowd or for yourself? “If you’re DJing and no one is liking it, maybe you need to rethink.” What does EDM mean to you? “I think a new generation of kids giving dance music a new label is a good thing.” Should celebrities be DJs? “If they love doing it, why not?” Have you ever been thrown off the decks? “I’m sure I have at some stage or another, but wouldn’t have been in a state that I’d remember.” Are you a DJ if you don’t beat match? “Of course. Not all styles of music require beat matching.” Where’s the next dance music capi- tal? “I honestly have no idea. Dance music seems to be super-strong everywhere I go.”

tyle: “Big room electro house.” Best known for: “Maybe my remixes, but probably my hair.” Tune of 2012: “My own remix of Deadmau5’s ‘The Veldt’.” Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2012: “I think Otto Knows is awesome and ‘Million Voices’ is such a beautiful, emotional piece of house music.”

making it into this year’s Top 100 DJs poll was “a complete surprise”. Ever since his “totally mesmerizing” dance music epiphany at Monastery in Brisbane, Tommy wanted to work as a DJ. Later on, inspired by tunes such as Vitalic’s ‘La Rock 01’, production became his goal. And if releases like this year’s progressive electro houser ‘Cascade’ are anything to go by, we’re all set to hear the name Tommy Trash a lot more in the future. CLAIRE HUGHES
