Educational facilities are increasingly taking the issue of energy efficiency seriously. As such, the replacement of lighting equipment in schools and universities can require considerable research into the performance of new systems. With this in mind, Sheffield Hallum University sought advice when replacing the lighting for their Owen Building.


The Owen Building is comprised of an open atrium with a large glass roof, which is surrounded by five floors and a restrictive ceiling. This meant that only lamps and luminaires of a specific size would be suitable for the project. The ceiling’s existing 1 x 36W PLL Switched Start Recessed fittings were the subject of much deliberation by companies in competition for the job, many of whom recommending that the fittings be reinstalled with high frequency control gear to provide some energy savings. Contrac Lighting, who was recommended to the University by electrical wholesaler NE Electrical, suggested a different approach. Alongside its Callidus Eco Lighting Solutions arm, Contrac designed a bespoke energy saving solution for the project, combining direct and indirect light fittings with DSI dimmable control gear and daylight occupancy sensors. Luckily, Contrac’s manufacturing is based close to Sheffield Hallum University, so the company was able to provide a really flexible solution for the project. Contrac Lighting provided a sample of their Softlux 6, which was then tailored into a bespoke fitting for the University by incorporating the specific dimensions of 575x575mm needed for the existing space, as well as options such as a linear panel controller, intelligent controls and different powder coating finishes that were offered

A total of six or seven samples were produced and trialed so that the university could test them to ensure that the lighting scheme was tailored to the Owens Building’s exact requirements. A total of 245 new fittings installed by Contrac Lighting, which consist of Tridonic PCA126TCL eco ballasts and 36W PLL Col 840 lamps, are linked to the University’s building management system, providing total control of the dimmable gear and sensors. Contrac Lighting is proud that this alone delivers savings of up to 30%. Because of the large glass roof in the Owen Building’s atrium, Contrac also had to consider the amount of daylight that comes flooding into the space. Previously, lights had been left on at all time, without taking the natural light into consideration, resulting in huge amounts of energy being wasted. This energy is now being saved, creating a less expensive system that is much better for the environment.
