Travel
to its four levels could be quicker, but their sedate pace allows the full view of the arriving Cove to be fully appreciated, and the route to the correct pretty reed covered beach tables to be made. T e roads and levels linking each other seem
at fi rst experience to be some sort of mutli- layered Mario game, but their charm soon becomes clear, and most areas are no more than a fi ve minute walk.
So what distinguishes the Daios Cove ? As our Greek realtor would say “topothesia, topothesia, topothesia” and its location and views are indeed quite stunning, with the polarised shades and hues of blue derived from the pool, the ocean and the sky giving a real lustre to the resort. Located and protected by quick rising cliff s, its easterly-facing U shaped bay welcomes the gentle sunrise as a kind prelude to the ever consistent heat of Crete. T e well-tended beach, and gently shelving sea-line off er easy swimming, augmented by a very vigilant beach team whose role blends between monitoring and mojitos. T e four restaurants include the Ocean Club,
Taverna and Pangea and they provide much in the way of authentic Greek fayre with the well stocked buff et-style of breakfast and dinner, and the gentler menu of the evening. However, even a place such as Daios Cove has an Orwellian equality, and it is only the occupants of the
higher end villas who are greeted into the Ocean Club at breakfast time. Here, one is given a slightly more measured level of service, and a much more stately view of the Cove. It is also those villas that provide such quality and expansiveness of room, with a private sauna, outside pool, Jacuzzi and for those unwilling to leave recovery of body until the return home, a treadmill overlooking the bay.
So, in Olympic year, have we found the gold standard of resorts in the home of these modern games? T e opulence and luxury of Daios Cove cannot be questioned, and the friendliness and
warmth of the staff are indeed unusual for such a high end resort. T ere are very few fl aws in the paradise that has been created here, and the grandeur of Daios overcomes minor irritations of the speed of the descent to the beach, or the maze-like obstacles of the pathways. Daios Cove has arrived in Crete, and is a gold medalist amongst the ambitious resorts of recent years, and should be on your list of contenders for a warm, luxurious and happy family holiday time.
