NAMIBIA How To Sell

With its hauntingly beautiful landscapes, endless sunshine, a desert that seems to stretch to infinity and a unique line-up of natural assets, it’s a surprise that Namibia steadfastly remains one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. While the south-west African country

offers the undiscovered face of Africa, it is also a fantastic safari alternative to higher profile destinations such as Botswana, Tanzania and South Africa. A-listers such as Brangelina and the Ocean’s 11 crew return to the country time and time again. Namibia has the 'Big Five' including the largest free-roaming population of cheetah and black rhino in the world. The country’s best-known wildlife

reserve, Etosha National Park, is game rich, although buffalos and a large variety of bird species are mainly concentrated in the Caprivi Strip. Zebra, giraffe, kudu, oryx, the smaller klipspringer antelope and a variety of smaller wildlife are also frequently spotted throughout the country. And then there’s the limitless space: one of Namibia’s unique selling points is that with a population of 2.1 million, it is the second most sparsely populated country in the world – when you are on safari it is often just you and the wildlife, creating a uniquely magical experience that is yours alone.

Namibia is the only country in Africa

where the elephant population grew by a third between 1995 and 2008 and it also has the largest annual game count in the world. And Namibia is also the only African country that can point to a growing population of free-roaming lion and giraffe. Looking for lions has a special appeal in Namibia, with populations spread from the Caprivi wetlands – where the black-maned lions prey on the African buffalo – to the Skeleton Coast where documented numbers have risen from just 25 in 1995 to well over a hundred today, making Namibia one of the greatest African wildlife recovery stories. In addition to Etosha safaris, Namibia’s

many must-see places will suit everyone from families to intrepid explorers. Highlights include the renowned Sossusvlei, with its monumental mountains of vibrant red-orange sands; Fish River Canyon, whose size and grandeur is only exceeded by the Grand Canyon; and the spectacular Skeleton

Coast, dotted with the timeless skeletons of shipwrecks. Tribal culture is also a fascinating element of Namibia and you can spend time interacting with numerous tribes such as the Himba, Herero and San people. Adrenaline junkies will be in their element with a wide range of adventure sports from sand-boarding to sky diving, as will photographers as Namibia boasts the best lighting for photography in the world. Photos taken on an iphone can quite easily be passed off as professional shots!

What’s New New lodges and renovations are constantly taking place throughout Namibia to keep the product fresh and exciting. Most recently, Etendeka Mountain Camp underwnet a complete refit whilst remaining true to the eco-friendly nature of the original camp. Etendeka remains one of the few properties in Namibia to bottle its own water, cook over hot coals and use a solar oven rather than using bottled gas. Erongo Wilderness Lodge has also undergone a complete rebuild with the 10 rooms being rebuilt from the

ground up. Spacious new tents stand on broad raised decks which allow for private relaxation in one of the most beautiful regions of Namibia. Wilderness Safaris is opening

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp next year and Swakopmund Boutique Hotel is now owned by Taleni which says it can provide guests and tour operators with very attractive circuit rates. Kicheche Valley, within the Naboisho Conservancy, has some special offers for 2012. The deals include three nights for the price of two, and four nights for the price of three at any Kicheche Camp. Both offers are valid for new bookings until December 20 2012. Guests can expect bush walks and night drives and sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah.
