Top Selling Tips...
• Recommend Sentosa… "Families will love Sentosa Island. It’s connected to Singapore by cable car, rail or road and has great family-friendly hotels, over 3kms of white beaches and attractions including Universal Studios Singapore”
JONATHAN DITTE Product Manager, Jetset
• Cruise Singapore River… "My top tip for visitors to Singapore would be to take a cruise down the river, where you’ll see how different one part of the city can be to the next”
KAREN MUNRO Far East Team Leader, Travel 2
• Say Sabah for outdoor adventure… "Adventurers will enjoy Sabah in Borneo, with excursions to climb Mount Kinabalu and trips to see orang-utans and turtles in their natural habitats. It can be twinned with KL or Singapore” JONATHAN DITTE
The biggest news in Singapore this
year is the opening of the Gardens by the Bay, a spectacular array of plants, ‘super-trees’ and landscaped gardens spread over an area equivalent to 177 football pitches. Close by, the inauguration of a new two-berth international cruise terminal, scheduled for late 2012, will boost Singapore’s standing in the cruise industry. In Malaysia, families will be interested in the September opening of the biggest Legoland outside of Europe. Located in Johor – close to Singapore – it will offer 40+ rides, shows and attractions.
What’s New
Malaysia Airlines' first A380 aircraft is flying direct between London Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur. The
delivery of a second plane in August will see it offer a daily A380 service.
In Malaysia the imminent opening of Johor’s Legoland theme park will be joined in 2014 by a Legoland Hotel, while KL is welcoming a 412-room Grand Hyatt (September 2012), a 500- room Ibis (late 2012), a 513-room Pullman (early 2013), a St Regis (2014), a Four Seasons (2015) and a 'Harrods Hotel' (2015), among others. The five- star Gaya Island has opened in Sabah. In Singapore, the 240-room W Sentosa Cove is the biggest hotel news. Recent hotel
openings include Joel
Robuchon and Wolfgang Puck.

Tourism Talk
STEPHANIE YONG Area Director Northern & Western Europe Singapore Tourism Board
“The latest official figures show a 5% increase from the UK over the first three months of the year – that’s around 139,000 visitors. We’re quietly hopeful about the next 12 months. There’s a lot to boost sales. The skyline’s constantly changing, and over the last couple of years we’ve rolled out a lot of new visitor options like Marina Bay Sands, Resorts World Sentosa and Gardens by the Bay. We also have a new international cruise terminal, and a S$180-million river safari opening next year. We’ve just done two roadshows in London and Manchester – the UK remains a very key market.”
LAURENCE LOGAN LECHUMANAN Deputy Director, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board
“Visitor numbers are positive – we’re looking at double-digit growth for this year. We had 430,000 UK visitors in 2010, which went down to 404,000 in 2011. This year we’re set to go back above 2010 levels. We’re intensifying our marketing and really looking to educate the trade – our online training campaign, Malaysian Masters, will be up and running in the third quarter of this year. Malaysia’s growing. There’s a huge number of hotels being built. Our main objective is to get 36 million arrivals by 2020. Currently we’re at 24.7 million. We’re on track.”
From The Front Line NANDITA PATEL
Far East Product Team Funway Holidays “Malaysia's hotels offer
great added-value with lots of free night offers and upgrades to entice customers. Borneo is selling particularly well and seems to be getting a lot more coverage for its diversity and its wildlife. Demand is good for our escorted tours there.”
DAVID CARLAW Head of Long Haul product, Premier Holidays “Borneo’s doing very well
– people love the soft adventure and the orang-utans – but Penang and Langkawi are losing out a little bit to Thailand. Singapore, for us, tends to be tied to Australia business. Australia’s picking up, so by consequence so is Singapore, and there are a lot of new attractions to draw people.”
DAVID POINTER Head of Product Western & Oriental “Singapore has a raised
profile due to new projects, and Singapore Airlines' fantastic airline offers. Langkawi and Borneo have done well for us, too – the two Shangri La properties in Borneo have finished multi-million pound renovations, which means all those loyal followers are returning.”
