IT WAS only last month Earls Court played host to the Olympics, where

its was transformed into a volleyball arena that witnessed Russia take gold. Now that the Olympic circus has left town, the stage is ready for a different kind of show – PLASA 2012, which will feature the latest innovations in entertainment and installation technology for theatres, nightclubs, permanent installs and leisure attractions. “Summer 2012 has provided PLASA members, London and the UK with a unique platform on which to showcase their credentials as one of – if not the – leading creative industries in the world,” comments PLASA CEO Matthew Griffiths.

The London 2012 games will

still leave their mark on the venue through Olympics Uncovered, which will feature as part of the revamped Professional Development Programme at PLASA. “The Olympics Uncovered programme has been created to celebrate our industry’s contribution to this monumental occasion with a series of fascinating educational sessions,” states Griffiths. The Olympics sessions will take their place among 10 programme categories that together offer 80 free-to-attend sessions. “The new-style programme

forms a roadmap for the next 12 months in theatre, live concert and touring, live events and installed environments. PLASA 2012 continues to be the place where pace setters converge to share expertise and ideas, and we are delighted by the concentration of talent coming to London this September, it is simply phenomenal,” continues Griffiths. Other subject areas within the audio side of the Professional Development Programme include The Back to Basics category, which contains three sessions from the Association of Sound Designers that examine strategies for recording sound effects, mixing amplified sound effectively and creatively, and setting delays on a sound system to create natural sounding reinforcement. One highlight is set to be John Leonard’s ‘Recording Sound Effects’, which will take attendees through the basics of his effects gathering process, microphone techniques and equipment choices – and he’ll share some of the tips, tricks and pitfalls of location recording.

programme is d&b audiotechnik’s ‘Sound System Fundamentals’ and ‘dB Limits – Mutual Respect, the Road to Compliance’ presented by Jacob Navne (noise and legislation consultant for Roskilde Festival). programme, ‘What’s Left in the Black Box’ asks leading loudspeaker designers, including Tony Andrews from Funktion One, Matthias Christner from d&b audiotechnik and Andy Pardoe from Traction Sound, how much more they think the traditional loudspeaker can be improved by physical engineering alone before we head down the DSP route. In addition, product demos will be held by manufacturers including Sennheiser, Duran Audio,

KV2 and Funktion One, while Midas, Tait and Yamaha will hold product-specific training sessions. Also new this year is the

AudioLab, a full-volume demo area dedicated to the demonstration of loudspeakers. “The famous Funktion One demo room has got some company at this year’s show as we take over a whole new space at Earls Court for large-scale demonstrations of the latest loudspeaker technology,” comments event manager, Sophie Atkinson. Martin Audio’s OmniLine, Bose’s RoomMatch and Norton Audio’s P1 System will take over this space. “Audio Lab offers us the

exciting opportunity to showcase our Bose RoomMatch arrays in a way that would be impossible on the show floor. The arrays are designed and installed to match the requirements of the room, and a mix of live band and recorded music will demonstrate the real value of the unique progressive directivity array

modules,” comments Sue Harrison, business development manager, Bose Professional Systems Division.

PRODUCTS Audio will also be prevalent on the showfloor, where Bose Professional Systems Division will be exhibiting its new ControlSpace SP-24 Sound Processor. It is designed to make audio processing setup quicker and easier, while simplifying DSP for 2 x 4 installed and portable applications. Also on the company’s stand will be the latest Bose amplifiers, including the PowerMatch 8500N configurable power amplifier and the FreeSpace IZA 250/190 integrated zone amplifiers. Demonstrations of the Bose software, including the new Bose ControlSpace Designer software, will also be available. Bosch Security Systems will introduce

the newest addition to its range of DCN Next Generation Conference Systems: the DCN-D Discussion unit. The system makes its debut

UK appearance as the company brings its inventory of congress solutions to PLASA for the first time. Adam Breeze, strategic

marketing manager, Bosch Security Systems, says of the reasoning behind the move: “In recent years we have seen an increase in the use of congress systems within the corporate market place. Having multiple channels of language translation and powerful voting functionality combined with the ability to record the entire audio track, and to publish it for accountability reasons, has increased adoption of these systems. At PLASA we want to discuss these systems with AV integrators and consultants who target the corporate environment.” Five versions of the new user-

friendly system are available; from a basic version with fixed microphone allowing a delegate to simply talk and listen, up to an extended version with pluggable microphone, electronic voting facility and a built-in channel selector for language selection of up to 31 interpretations. Clear-Com will be showcasing

its new HelixNet Partyline Intercom System after successfully implementing the system in 31 sports venues during the 2012 Summer Games. Partyline comprises the HMS- 4X Main Station, HBP-2X Beltpacks, HLI-2W2 two-wire Interface Module and the HLI-4W2 four-wire Interface Module. The system offers the audio clarity of digitalised Clear-Com sound, central administration of the entire system from the Main Station, single and flexible cable options,
