An application has been made to turn the site into a mixed-use development, writes Erica Basnicki

ORIGINALLY REPORTED by the Ham & High (Hamstead & Highgate Express), it has been revealed that singer David Gray has made an application to Haringey Council to turn Crouch End’s The Church Studios into five flats, with shops and office spaces. Gray, known best for tunes including Babylon and Please Forgive Me and the best-selling album White Ladder, bought

The Church in 2003 from the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, who originally converted the former Park Chapel into a studio in 1984. The Eurythmics completed their debut album, Sweet Dreams, at The Church. Posting on his own Facebook

UNITED STATES/EUROPE If you’re going to San Francisco… By Erica Basnicki

PORTABLE DEVICES and project studios are taking centre stage at the 133rd Convention in San Francisco next month, the Audio Engineering Society has revealed. The organisation has also announced initial plans for next year’s AES Europe event. One of several debuts to take place in San Francisco is the Project Studio Expo, featuring practical training and an exhibit area focused on project studio technology, recording techniques, best practices, and practical tips from leaders in the recording business. “I think we can safely say this two-day event will be a highlight of the

convention,” said AES executive director Bob Moses. Another Special Event is a panel discussion, moderated by Gateway Mastering president Bob Ludwig (Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Mumford & Sons), on the Mastered For iTunes initiative. The discussion hopes to clarify the frequently misunderstood process which promises AAC files that sound like the 44.1kHz/24-bit PCM encode masters. In a similar vein, portable

and streamed audio – as well as the devices it’s played on – will be the focus of the Product Design Track. Portable/ streamed audio will be further explored through the expanded broadcast/streaming media

sessions including ‘What Happens to Your Production When Played Back On Diverse Media?’ chaired by CBS’ David Bialik. Meanwhile, Moses, has

confirmed that that 134th AES Convention will take place in Rome, Italy, on 4-7 May 2013. This marks the first time an AES Convention will be held in the ‘Eternal City’. No exhibitor details have

been released, suggesting a new approach to the European AES convention following a diminished exhibitor turnout at the 132nd convention in Budapest. Vice president of the AES Southern Europe region, Umberto Zanghieri, will chair

Multi-platinum mastering engineer Bob Ludwig will moderate the Mastered For iTunes panel

the convention, which will be held at the new Roma Eventi – Fontana di Trevi Conference Centre. The recently-opened centre is situated near to the Quirinale Palace and the Trevi Fountain, in a magnificent neoclassical palace, built by Guido Barluzzi in 1930. (...In memory of the late Scott

Fan Page, Dave Stewart commented: “It has so many memories for me, not just recording sessions. I would host evening soirées with poets, philosophers, musicians, etc. Burn frankincense on huge columns at 2am. Dylan would turn up with his band and hold court etc, or Joni Mitchell would play drums! Things have changed now, music scene is not the same, I understand him having to sell, I wasn’t bothered about the cost of running it (always at a loss).” The Church Studios’ manager Chris Norton added: “Having

owned and enjoyed The Church for nearly 10 years, it is time to move on. David would be delighted to sell The Church Studios as a going concern but given the current upheaval in the music business and the repercussions on commercial recording studios, it is only prudent to explore other avenues, including redevelopment.” Studio A features a 56-channel SSL G series consoles, one of the very first G series desks ever

delivered. Clients of The Church have included James Morrison, Depeche Mode, Ray Lamontagne, Radiohead, Bombay Bicycle Club, My Bloody Valentine, Kaiser Chiefs and Elvis Costello. Speaking to the Ham & High,

Crouch End residents objected to the proposed redevelopment: “Crouch End’s music heritage is what makes it such a special place to live. Turning such a culturally rich building into flats is not in the spirit of Crouch End,” said Sue Hessel, chairman of Haslemere Road Residents’ Association. “This will have a significant

effect on the vitality of the local arts scene and the character of the area,” added Crouch Hill resident Steve Watson, in a letter to Haringey Council opposing the plans.

The council have yet to decide on whether to grant the appropriate planning permissions. n www.thechurchstudios.com

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis is recording on the road using his laptop and Antelope Audio’s Eclipse 384 converter, master clock and monitor controller. His portable rig is currently being used for a ‘metalstep’ collaboration with producers Sluggo and Tyler Blue called Killbot. “The stuff I actually do on the road I keep and it sounds great – it’s not just a demo that I have to rework or re-record later,” he said. www.antelopeaudio.com

UK studio technical designer White Mark has completed two preview theatres for NBC Universal at its new international headquarters in London. Working with architects T P Bennett and cinema optics consultant Lawrence Claydon, White Mark designed a 64-seat, double height screening room on the ground floor of the building and a smaller 18-seat theatre on the first floor. Both theatres are now being used for executive and private screenings. www.whitemark.com

André Toscano of Lisbon-based ADAM Audio distributor Audio:log has launched The Microphone Spa, a website showcasing his extensive dynamic microphone collection. “It’s not a commercial project, more a labour of love,” says the humble Toscano – though, in the short time since its launched, the site has already received more than 3,000 visitors. http://the-microphone-spa.com www.audiolog-lda.com
