BUSINESS PROFILE

Bank on us D

espite the continuing squeeze on public spending and the recession- hit business climate, funding for rail refurbishment projects continues to offer opportunities for businesses looking to diversify into new areas. Approximately £35bn has been earmarked for work on railway infrastructure over Control Period 4 (CP4) from 2009-2014 plus an additional £15bn is being invested in Crossrail, and overall rail construction is set to rise by 55 per cent in the next three years, according to the Construction Products Association (CPA). While major refurbishment projects

such as Kings Cross and Birmingham New Street may grab the headlines, across the UK there are numerous smaller-scale station refurbishment projects scheduled or underway that provide opportunities for enterprising firms in the construction sector. With this sector continuing to struggle – overall, construction output fell by 5.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 – rail is encouraging the sort of SME activity that the government is very keen to see.

Johnson Bros (Oldham) is one such specialist construction company. Established in 1965, Johnson Bros has built a reputation for high quality workmanship and customer service within the building, joinery and property maintenance industry. Its speciality, though, is security work, with its customers including household names such as Royal Bank of Scotland, Nat West, Lloyds TSB, North West Water, plus local authorities and nationwide property management firms.

Security

Johnson Bros has a long and successful history in the design and installation of bank security works, including security doors, secure pass lobbies and partitions, security glazing and ceilings, and window bars. It has worked for RBS and Nat West for around 30 years and is a specified subcontractor for security installation work on its premises. With years of experience, Johnson’s personnel are able to advise and work with security advisors in the design and construction of most forms of security for bank and building society branches. Now, Johnson Bros is looking at the rail infrastructure market.

particularly in station refurbishment,’ says Neil Skinner, director of Johnson Bros. ‘Office security is critical in any sector, and the railway industry has valuable equipment – and cash – in its station premises. We have the experience, knowledge and products to assess the requirements of individual premises. And, as we’ve done for many years with our banking clients, we are able to provide a comprehensive security solution, protecting properties from vandalism as well as securing buildings, ticket offices and so on.’

Although based in Oldham, Johnson Bros works all across the UK on security installations, from Edinburgh to London and the South East. It manufactures and installs security doors and frames to client specifications, and its unique security glazing – made from a tough polymer that is 250-times stronger than glass – is an effective anti-attack system with a track record of foiling would-be bank robbers.

‘Most of our work comes from recommendations – people see the

work we’ve done or hear about us and approach us directly,’ says Skinner. ‘We’re proud of our reputation for high quality workmanship and expertise in security installations. Johnson Bros offers a unique package of security product installations that no one else is offering, and can provide clients with a complete and comprehensive “one-stop shop” service.’ Skinner is now looking to expand the security-based area of the business into the rail refurbishment arena. ‘We have the security solutions and experience that are ideal for the rail sector,’ he says. ‘Any contractor looking for a security specialist to work on a station refurbishment should get in touch with us. Having worked in security for banks for 30 years, we know exactly what’s required and our unique skills set enables us to deliver precisely what we say we can – and to meet our clients needs.’
